zendframework/zend-i18n-resources
Translation resources for zend-i18n: prebuilt translation files for validator messages, captcha, and other Zend Framework components. Load them into your Translator to localize error and UI strings without writing translations yourself.
Architecture fit — poor to moderate. zendframework/zend-i18n-resources is not a library in the conventional sense; it is a data-only package. It ships translated message catalogs (validator errors, captcha messages, date/phone formatting strings) as PHP arrays under resources/languages/{locale}/{domain}.php, consumed by zend-i18n's Translator. Laravel has an entirely separate translation stack (Illuminate\Translation\Translator, Illuminate\Contracts\Translation\Translator, file/JSON loaders, __() / @lang / trans_choice). There is no service provider, facade, config file, or contract bridging the two. The only reusable asset is the catalog data itself, not the code.
Integration feasibility — feasible but low leverage. Two viable paths:
Zend\I18n\Translator\Translator, or write a custom FileLoader that ingests the array files into Laravel translation groups. Real friction points: Zend message IDs are dot/snake keys scoped to text domains, while Laravel scopes by group/namespace; placeholder conventions differ (%value%, %min% vs. Laravel's :attribute, :min); pluralization is PluralRule-based rather than Laravel's |-delimited trans_choice syntax.lang/{locale}/*.php, then drop the dependency entirely.Technical risk — high, and largely avoidable.
abandoned flag on install; the maintained successor is laminas/laminas-i18n-resources.zendframework/* namespace was superseded by laminas/*; pulling it into a modern app risks duplicate-class or version-constraint conflicts if any Laminas package is already present.Key questions before commit:
caouecs/laravel-lang is a strictly better fit)?ext-intl?laminas-i18n-resources be the sanctioned substitute?Stack fit. Requires PHP ^5.6 || ^7.x at the declared constraint; runs on PHP 8 only by tolerance, not by test coverage. Data files are plain PHP arrays — no runtime I/O, no cache, no external services. Some catalogs assume ICU/ext-intl locale data.
Recommended path: extract, don't depend. For a Laravel codebase, the pragmatic sequence is:
resources/languages/{locale}/*.php into Laravel-native lang/{locale}/{group}.php, mapping Zend domains → Laravel groups and rewriting %placeholder% → :placeholder.lang/vendor/... or a package namespace) so they don't collide with application strings.lang/{locale}/validation.php explicitly rather than globally overriding the translator.LICENSE attribution for the BSD-3-Clause corpus.Fallback path (if runtime parity with Zend is genuinely required): depend on laminas/laminas-i18n-resources rather than the archived Zend package, and build the bridge against Laminas\I18n\Translator\TranslatorInterface.
Compatibility notes.
%value% text in production UI.PluralRule per-locale arrays must be flattened into Laravel |-syntax or handled by a custom MessageSelector.en_US-style identifiers in places; Laravel expects en. Normalize at load time.Sequencing guidance. Timebox the spike. If extraction exceeds two days or locale coverage misses the target list, abandon the package entirely and adopt caouecs/laravel-lang, which is purpose-built for Laravel and actively maintained.
Maintenance — full ownership. With upstream archived, every locale correction, placeholder fix, and PHP-version compatibility issue becomes ours. Vendoring the data localizes this cost but does not eliminate it; a quarterly drift check against laminas/laminas-i18n-resources is the minimum viable process.
Support — none. No maintainer response, no CVE feed, no changelog. Security posture must be assessed as "static data, low exploit surface, but no patch path." This is acceptable for strings; it is not acceptable for anything that touches input parsing.
Scaling — negligible runtime cost. Catalogs are static arrays; per-locale lazy loading keeps memory flat. The only scaling concern is naive "load all locales at boot," which is a self-inflicted anti-pattern easily avoided. No cache, queue, or network implications.
Failure modes to instrument:
%placeholder% text in the UI. Add a CI check that every referenced key resolves in every supported locale.abandoned warning — breaks CI in strict-audit pipelines; another argument for extraction over dependency.Ramp-up — low, but non-zero. No Laravel-specific knowledge transfers; engineers need a brief orientation to Zend's domain/placeholder/plural conventions during the extraction. Budget half a day of onboarding plus a written runbook covering the extraction script, the locale add/update procedure, and the drift-check cadence.
TPM verdict. Treat this as a content source, not a dependency. The opportunity score and archived status both point the same way: extract the catalogs under BSD-3-Clause, normalize them to Laravel conventions, and ship without a runtime link to an abandoned framework. Pursue only if the specific validator/captcha catalogs are required and absent from caouecs/laravel-lang; otherwise that package is the lower-risk default.
