zendframework/zend-form
Zend Form provides form building, elements, fieldsets, collections, input filters, validation integration, and view helpers for Zend Framework applications. This package is abandoned and superseded by laminas/laminas-form.
Architecture fit. zend-form is a framework-agnostic form object model (Form, Fieldset, Collection, Element) coupled to zend-inputfilter for validation and, historically, to zend-view helpers for rendering. Laravel's idiomatic stack is FormRequest + Validator + Blade components. These are two parallel, non-composable architectures for the same concern: if we adopt zend-form we own two validation engines, two rendering paths, and two error-messaging conventions in one codebase. The only defensible fit is as a contained bridge for porting existing Zend/Laminas form definitions, not as a forward-looking choice for new Laravel work.
Integration feasibility. Composer-installable and namespace-isolated (Zend\Form\*), so it will not collide with Illuminate\*. However it drags in a transitive tree of zendframework/* packages (zend-inputfilter, zend-stdlib, zend-filter, zend-validator), all archived, all flagged abandoned by Composer 2, and all outside our security patching. Rendering into Blade requires a custom adapter or a zend-view renderer shim — there is no supported Laravel integration.
Technical risk. High and one-directional:
InputFilter validation rules, filters, and error keys do not map 1:1 to Laravel's validator; silent acceptance/rejection differences are the most dangerous failure class in a form layer.Key questions.
laminas/laminas-form (the maintained successor, drop-in namespace swap) an acceptable substitute? If not, why not?Stack fit. Poor as a primary dependency; acceptable only as a temporary, quarantined compatibility layer. Recommended: do not install zend-form in the application's root require. Instead isolate it in an internal package (acme/legacy-forms) that exposes a narrow interface (render(), validate(), toArray()) so the rest of the app never imports Zend\* directly.
Migration path.
laminas/laminas-form — the direct successor with the same API under Laminas\Form\*. One-time namespace rewrite, actively maintained, PHP 8 support. This is the cheapest risk reduction available and should be the default recommendation.laminas-form is rejected, freeze and fork: vendor the specific zendframework/* versions into a private VCS or use Composer replace to point at a maintained mirror, with a documented patch process.Compatibility. Pin PHP and Composer constraints explicitly; enable composer audit in CI; block transitive zendframework/* version drift with a lockfile policy. Verify against our PHPUnit and static-analysis (PHPStan/Psalm) baselines — archived code will generate baseline noise. Check for PHP 8.x deprecations early with a smoke test rather than discovering them in staging.
Sequencing.
InputFilter output against Laravel Validator output).zend-form on a dated milestone; add a CI rule failing the build if Zend\ is imported outside the adapter package.Maintenance. Effectively permanent internal ownership: no upstream releases, no bug fixes, no PHP-version enablement. Budget for at least a named maintainer and a documented fork/patch runbook. Every future PHP upgrade becomes a project rather than a dependency bump.
Support. No vendor, no community channel, no CVE feed. Security response falls entirely on us — triage, patch, and disclose internally. This is the single largest total-cost-of-ownership item and should be priced into any business case.
Scaling. Runtime performance is a non-issue: form hydration and validation are negligible at any realistic request volume. The scaling cost is engineering throughput — onboarding friction, dual validation semantics, and a rendering path that diverges from every Laravel convention. Team velocity degrades in proportion to how many engineers must touch forms.
Failure modes.
zendframework/* tree.composer install/CI eroding engineers' trust in dependency warnings.Ramp-up. Zend Form's mental model (ServiceManager factories, InputFilter specs, view helper plugins, fieldset/collection naming conventions like foo[bar][]) is unfamiliar to a Laravel team. Expect meaningful ramp-up for anyone editing forms, plus the ongoing cost of retaining that knowledge on a component we are actively trying to remove. Documentation of the adapter contract and the parity harness is mandatory, not optional.
Recommendation. Do not adopt zend-form for new development. If existing Zend Form definitions must be supported, migrate to laminas-form behind a narrow adapter interface, run parity tests, and commit to a dated port to native Laravel form handling. The package's historical quality score does not offset the risk of building on an archived, unpatched dependency at the center of our input-validation and rendering surface.
