Geopattern Laravel Package

redeyeventures/geopattern

Generate unique geometric SVG background patterns from any string. This PHP port of GeoPattern offers multiple pattern types and color themes, making it easy to add lightweight, deterministic decorative backgrounds to Blade views or any PHP app.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • Pure-PHP SVG generator with no binary/runtime dependencies (no GD, no Imagick, no headless browser). It is a deterministic pure function: seed string → SHA-512 → pattern template + derived palette → SVG string. That makes it trivially cacheable, idempotent, and safe in stateless/read-only containers, queue workers, and serverless runtimes.
  • The Laravel packaging layer is thin and idiomatic (service provider + facade, auto-discovery on 5.5+), so it resolves through the container like any first-party helper. The core generator can also be used standalone, which de-risks the Laravel coupling.
  • Output is vector, typically a few KB, gzips extremely well, and scales to any viewport. Fits placeholder/fallback imagery, profile covers, empty states, 404 pages, email headers, and admin UI avatars.
  • It is not an asset pipeline or a CDN product — it renders on request. Value depends on where you call it, not on the package itself.

Integration feasibility

  • Low surface area: composer require, optional config publish, one facade call. A working proof-of-concept is an hour; production hardening is the real work.
  • Works equally well inlined as a data:image/svg+xml CSS background (no network request, no origin trust issue) or served from a dedicated route with long-lived immutable caching.
  • Fits any Laravel app; also drops into plain PHP, Symfony, or a queue job producing static assets.

Technical risk

  1. Maintenance/dependency drift — highest risk. Last release 2021-03-16, 111 stars, no active upstream. Expect the illuminate/support constraint to fight Laravel 9/10/11 and the code to predate PHP 8.1/8.2/8.3 deprecations (dynamic properties, implicit nullable parameters, ${} interpolation). Assume a fork is required rather than an install.
  2. PHP 8.x compatibility unverified. Most of the code is string templating, which usually survives, but this needs a real CI run rather than an assumption.
  3. Parity with the Ruby original (jasonlong/geo_pattern) is unverified. If visual consistency across services matters, the hash→pattern mapping must be golden-tested.
  4. Security surface is small but non-zero. Generated SVGs contain no scripts, and the seed is hashed rather than interpolated, so injection is unlikely — but confirm nothing echoes the raw seed into markup, and serve with Content-Type: image/svg+xml, X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff, and preferably from a cookie-less subdomain or as a data URI.
  5. Design/brand fit. "Beautiful generative patterns" is subjective; the default palettes may read as playful rather than on-brand for a polished product. Expect design iteration, not just engineering.
  6. License is fine (MIT), with attribution to the upstream Ruby project.

Key questions

  • Which Laravel and PHP versions are in the target production stack, and is a fork acceptable?
  • Is SVG sufficient, or do we need raster (PNG/OG images for social cards, PDFs, email clients that strip data URIs)?
  • Where is it served: inlined data URI, app route, or pre-generated build asset?
  • Do we need byte-for-byte parity with the Ruby implementation?
  • Is there a brand palette we must constrain colors to? If yes, the color-derivation logic needs overriding.
  • Do our CSP rules permit data: URIs and inline SVG backgrounds?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Laravel 8 / PHP 7.4–8.0: direct install should work as-is.
  • Laravel 9+ / PHP 8.1+: assume a constraint conflict; plan to vendor or fork the generator class and drop the service provider.
  • Non-Laravel services (a small image service, a worker): use the core class only.

Migration path

  • Spike first. Install on a branch, run composer why-not, run PHPStan/Rector on the target PHP version, then generate ~50 patterns from realistic seeds and screenshot them for design review.
  • Encapsulate regardless of outcome. Put the generator behind an internal PatternGenerator interface (generate(string $seed): string). This is the single highest-value decision: it makes the upstream package an implementation detail and lets you swap to a maintained fork, an in-house generator, or a JS-side approach later without touching call sites.
  • If the fork is needed: move the generator class into App\Support\GeoPattern, strip the provider/facade, pin behavior with golden-file tests (seed → expected SVG), and note the MIT attribution.

Compatibility

  • Auto-discovery covers 5.5+; register the provider/alias manually only for legacy apps.
  • Normalize seeds to UTF-8 before hashing — SHA-512 over raw bytes means encoding differences across services silently change output.
  • Add #[\AllowDynamicProperties] or fix property declarations if PHP 8.2+ trips deprecations.

Sequencing

  1. Verify: license, PHP/Laravel matrix, PHPStan clean, visual sample to design.
  2. Encapsulate behind the internal interface with golden tests.
  3. Adopt on the lowest-risk surface first — dev placeholders, empty states, admin avatars.
  4. Extend to user-facing surfaces (profile covers, email headers) after design sign-off.
  5. Only then add a served route: URL carries the seed hash, response carries Cache-Control: public, max-age=31536000, immutable so the CDN absorbs all traffic.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Effectively unmaintained upstream. Budget explicit internal ownership: roughly 600 lines and ~15 pattern templates — cheap to own, but it needs a named owner and a place in the CI matrix.
  • Pin the exact version, commit the lockfile, and treat any PHP minor upgrade as a trigger to re-run the golden tests.

Support

  • Low expected ticket volume: deterministic, no external services, no rate limits, no data storage.
  • Most "bugs" will be subjective ("this pattern is ugly," "colors clash with our brand"). Route those to design, and expose a palette override so they don't become engineering work.
  • No vendor to escalate to; the escalation path is internal.

Scaling

  • Cost per generation is sub-millisecond to low single-digit milliseconds — negligible next to framework boot. It is CPU-only and horizontally trivial.
  • Generate once, cache forever. The seed is the cache key; patterns are immutable by construction.
  • Inlining data URIs avoids a request entirely but adds ~1–3 KB per pattern to the HTML — fine for a hero background, worth measuring for a 100-row list of avatars.
  • No queue, no storage, no external dependency, no failover concern.

Failure modes

  • Composer resolution failure at deploy — mitigate with the fork and a CI install check against the target framework version.
  • Fatal/deprecation after a PHP runtime bump — mitigate with a CI matrix plus golden-file tests.
  • Exception on empty/oversized seed — wrap calls in try/catch returning a static fallback asset; truncate and normalize seeds defensively.
  • Determinism drift after a library or encoding change — store the seed, not the rendered SVG, so output can be regenerated; golden tests catch accidental changes.
  • Serving from the app origin with missing headers — set the correct content type and nosniff, or avoid the issue entirely by inlining as a data URI.
  • Accessibility: treat output as decorative (aria-hidden="true", role="presentation") and verify contrast for any text overlaid on it.
  • Page-weight regression if inlined at scale without measurement.

Ramp-up

  • Engineering: under a day for a mid-level Laravel developer — the concept (hash → deterministic SVG) explains in one sentence, and the API is one or two methods.
  • Design: the longer pole. Expect one to two weeks of palette/pattern iteration to reach brand-consistent output, plus a decision on whether to allow the full pattern vocabulary or a curated subset.
  • Rough effort: 1–2 dev-days for spike, wrapper, tests, and caching route; design iteration tracked separately.
