Geopattern Laravel Package

redeyeventures/geopattern

Generate unique geometric SVG background patterns from any string. This PHP port of GeoPattern offers multiple pattern types and color themes, making it easy to add lightweight, deterministic decorative backgrounds to Blade views or any PHP app.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature: "personalization without uploads." A string (user ID, email, project name, tag slug) deterministically maps to a distinct SVG pattern. That unlocks default avatars, project/category tiles, empty-state art, and doc/blog hero backgrounds with zero asset storage, zero CDN cost, and zero user friction.
  • Build vs. buy. The underlying idea (hash a string → seeded SVG geometry + palette) is a 1–2 day engineering build, but the value here is the curated geometry/palette design, not the algorithm. Adopting a 111-star MIT package is the cheap path; the real decision is whether the output quality clears your design bar, which is a 30-minute spike, not a sprint.
  • Roadmap sequencing. This is a "polish" investment, not a growth lever. Best slotted into onboarding/profile work already in flight — a fallback avatar and a project card look intentional in a way a gray silhouette does not. Do not build a roadmap theme around it.
  • Privacy/architecture decision. Because generation is local and synchronous, it lets you say "no Gravatar, no external avatar API, no third-party image service" — a real compliance and vendor-reduction talking point.
  • A/B and demo velocity. Seeded output means you can generate consistent placeholder imagery for prototypes, seed data, and marketing mockups without a designer in the loop.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when all of these hold:

  • You need deterministic imagery derived from an existing identifier, not arbitrary art.
  • Your stack is PHP/Laravel and the consuming surface is SVG-tolerant (modern browsers, in-app UI).
  • You want no storage, no queue, no external call — generation is a pure function of the input string.
  • Your risk tolerance for a low-traffic dependency is high, or your team is willing to vendor/fork it.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Maintenance risk is disqualifying. Last release was 2021-03-16 at 111 stars. Before adoption, verify PHP 8.3+ and current Laravel support, confirm the SVG output is sanitized (a user-controlled string flowing into markup is an XSS vector worth a 10-minute read of the source), and assume you may own the fork.
  • You need raster output. og:image crawlers, email clients, and some social platforms won't render SVG. Generating PNGs needs an extra conversion step and reintroduces GD/Imagick.
  • You need accessibility guarantees. Pattern palettes don't know about your contrast ratios or dark mode; you'll be layering your own palette/contrast checks on top.
  • You need brand-grade art. This produces pleasant generated texture, not illustrations. If the surface is a hero section on the marketing site, commission the asset.
  • You're on a hot path. Generating per request for every avatar on a list view is wasteful — cache or precompute to a column/object store.
  • You need a maintained, supported dependency with SLAs or a security-response track record.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: A small, MIT-licensed utility that gives every user, project, and tag a distinct, recognizable visual identity generated from its own name — no uploads, no stock photos, no storage bill, no third-party image service. It removes the gray-silhouette problem in profiles and makes list views look designed. Cost is roughly one engineering day to integrate and cache; the risk is that the package hasn't shipped since 2021, which we mitigate by vendoring or forking it if the spike looks good. Recommend: one-day spike, then adopt or drop.

To engineering: It's a pure string→SVG function, so it slots in as a view helper or an accessor with no infrastructure change. Generation should be cached (per entity, or written to storage/CDN) rather than recomputed per render. Two things to check before we commit: SVG output sanitization for user-controlled strings, and determinism across versions — if the palette/geometry drifts on upgrade, stored or cached images will change under users, so pin the version. If the dependency looks unmaintained, the fallback is to lift the generator into our codebase; the license permits it.
