Bootstrap Laravel Package

nette/bootstrap

Nette Bootstrap is the bootstrap layer for Nette Framework applications. It loads configuration, initializes the DI container and environment, and wires up the application so requests can be handled with minimal setup.

Technical Evaluation

  • Architecture fit: Poor for a Laravel codebase. nette/bootstrap is the bootstrap/configurator layer for Nette applications, centered on Nette\Bootstrap\Configurator, NEON configuration, and Nette DI container creation. Laravel already owns this lifecycle through bootstrap/app.php, the service container, configuration repository, environment loading, exception handling, and service providers. Running both creates two competing bootstrap/container models.
  • Integration feasibility: Low. The package is not a Laravel package, has no service provider, facade, package discovery support, or Laravel-native configuration bridge. A Laravel application could technically install it via Composer and instantiate Configurator manually, but that would create a parallel Nette container with little value and substantial lifecycle ambiguity.
  • Technical risk: High. Key risks include duplicate/conflicting containers, NEON vs. Laravel config, debug/error-handler collisions, global state, autoloading assumptions, and unclear ownership of application bootstrapping. The package metadata also raises governance flags: repository is unknown, license is NOASSERTION, and the stated last release date is in the future relative to evaluation, so release integrity should be validated before any dependency decision.
  • Key questions: What exact Nette capability is needed that Laravel does not already provide? Is the goal to reuse Nette DI, NEON config, or a full Nette application? Can the Nette subsystem be isolated from Laravel’s request lifecycle, or would it run as a parallel container? Has legal approved the NOASSERTION license? Is the release metadata accurate and reproducible? Who owns upgrades and debugging across two frameworks?
  • TPM recommendation: Do not adopt nette/bootstrap as a Laravel integration dependency. If Nette-specific functionality is required, evaluate the narrowest Nette component instead of the bootstrap package, and only after a bounded proof of concept proves no container, config, or lifecycle conflict.

Integration Approach

  • Stack fit: Weak. Laravel’s conventions are PHP config files, .env, service providers, facades, and framework-managed caching. nette/bootstrap expects Nette conventions: NEON files, Nette DI extensions, Nette temp directories, and Nette’s own bootstrap sequence. These are not naturally composable.
  • Migration path: Do not migrate Laravel’s bootstrap to Nette. For a Nette-to-Laravel migration, replace Configurator with Laravel’s bootstrap and service providers, convert NEON configuration into Laravel config files, translate Nette DI services into container bindings/providers, and map Nette application/presenter concerns to Laravel controllers, jobs, or Livewire/Inertia as appropriate.
  • Compatibility: Composer installation may succeed, but runtime compatibility is the concern. Laravel version, PHP version, Nette DI version, and transitive Nette dependencies must be pinned and tested. Laravel package discovery will not apply. The package’s NOASSERTION license and unknown repository status require legal and supply-chain review before use.
  • Sequencing: If a stakeholder insists on evaluation, sequence it as: 1) confirm the business need and Laravel-native alternative, 2) complete license/repository/release-integrity review, 3) run an isolated spike outside the main request lifecycle, 4) prove no container or error-handler collision, 5) define a hard boundary around any Nette subsystem, and 6) reject if dual bootstrapping cannot be avoided. The default path should be no integration and no migration.

Operational Impact

  • Maintenance: High relative to value. The team would maintain two framework mental models, two configuration systems, and two upgrade cadences. Nette bootstrap upgrades would need separate regression testing against Laravel’s lifecycle.
  • Support: Weak for this use case. Nette has an active ecosystem, but support is Nette-oriented, not Laravel-oriented. Internal Laravel engineers will have limited familiarity with Configurator, NEON, and Nette DI debugging.
  • Scaling: The package is a bootstrap concern, not a horizontal-scaling library, so it does not improve scaling. It does add operational complexity, especially under Laravel Octane or other long-running workers where global state, error handlers, and container boot assumptions are more sensitive.
  • Failure modes: Likely failures include container boot conflicts, missing or misconfigured NEON files, temp-directory permission issues, debug/error-handler override, environment-variable mismatch, stale cached configuration, autoload/class conflicts, and unclear failure ownership between Laravel and Nette. License ambiguity is a non-technical failure mode with release-blocking potential.
  • Ramp-up: High for a Laravel team. Engineers would need to learn Nette bootstrap semantics and DI extensions while also preserving Laravel conventions. The learning cost is difficult to justify for a package that duplicates functionality Laravel already provides.
