Bootstrap Laravel Package

nette/bootstrap

Nette Bootstrap is the bootstrap layer for Nette Framework applications. It loads configuration, initializes the DI container and environment, and wires up the application so requests can be handled with minimal setup.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Framework standardization: this is a Nette Framework bootstrapping package, not a Laravel one. It informs the "which PHP stack do we standardize on?" decision — specifically the cost of standing up a Nette app (config loading, environment handling, DI container wiring) versus Laravel/Symfony's built-in equivalents. If we're not on Nette, this package is out of scope entirely.
  • Build vs. buy vs. assemble: nette/bootstrap is a thin, single-responsibility layer — a few hundred lines that replace hand-rolled config loaders and container setup. The decision it supports is "do we hand-roll bootstrap code, or take the small dependency?" Adoption cost is low; so is lock-in.
  • Configuration strategy: drives whether the team standardizes on NEON config files and environment-segmented configs (production/development/local) across services — a convention decision with downstream effects on onboarding and ops tooling.
  • Roadmap scoping for existing Nette estates: if we already run Nette services, this is the upgrade path for bootstrapping and a dependency to track for framework-version compatibility.
  • Risk/vendor decisions: with a NOASSERTION license and an unknown repository, the PM-owned call is whether to green-light adoption pending legal and engineering verification. That's a gate, not a footnote.
  • Small-surface-area bets: internal admin panels, back-office tools, and small services where a minimal-footprint PHP framework beats a full-stack one.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • The project is already a Nette application (or the team has committed to Nette) and needs declarative bootstrap + DI configuration.
  • You want environment-specific configuration (dev/prod/CLI) without writing custom loader code.
  • You're building a small-to-medium service, internal tool, or admin panel where a lean framework with convention-over-configuration is preferred over Symfony full-stack.
  • You want a small, auditable dependency surface rather than a large framework bundle.

Look elsewhere when:

  • The project is Laravel. Use Laravel's native bootstrap (bootstrap/app.php in Laravel 11+, service providers, config/*.php). Bolting nette/bootstrap onto Laravel is an anti-pattern with no upside.
  • The project is Symfony — use the Symfony Kernel and its config component.
  • Hiring/ecosystem breadth matters more than footprint: Laravel and Symfony have vastly larger talent pools, package ecosystems, and third-party integrations.
  • You require unambiguous licensing or a commercial support/SLA path. NOASSERTION must be resolved before adoption — Nette is conventionally BSD-3-Clause, but the PM should not assume that from a metadata field.
  • You need to rely on release cadence as a signal: the listed last release date (2026-10-28) is in the future/anomalous, and the repository field is unknown. Treat the metadata as unverified and confirm actual activity on Packagist/GitHub before citing it in a business case.
  • 686 stars is a modest signal — it's a mature, narrow-purpose component, not a community juggernaut. Don't present it as ecosystem momentum.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one paragraph): This is a small, mature plumbing library for a specific PHP framework (Nette) — it handles application startup and configuration so engineers don't write that code themselves. It is not a strategic platform decision and it is not for our Laravel work. The reason to care is cost and risk: adoption is cheap and exit is cheap, but two items need clearing first — the license metadata is unasserted (legal needs to confirm it's the expected BSD-3-Clause) and the repository/release metadata is incomplete, so engineering needs to verify the project is actively maintained. Recommendation: treat it as a low-stakes, framework-scoped dependency, not a platform bet, and gate adoption on those two verifications.

For engineering (short): Thin bootstrap/config/DI layer for Nette. Only relevant if we're on Nette — otherwise skip it and use the host framework's native bootstrapping. If adopted: pin the version, confirm PHP compatibility, and note that its config conventions (NEON) become a team standard we'll need to document. Please verify the license and current release cadence before we commit it to the dependency manifest.
