Getting Started

This is an early-stage (v0.1.x) Filament plugin for embedding AI chat functionality into a Filament panel. Because the release notes for v0.1.2 are only a changelog link (no described features or breaking changes), treat the public API as unstable and pin the exact version in composer.json until v1.0.

First steps:

  1. Require the package: composer require filaforge/filament-chat-ai:0.1.2 (pin the version explicitly).
  2. Publish assets/config if the package registers them: php artisan vendor:publish --tag="filament-chat-ai-config" and any migration/asset tags listed by the package's README.
  3. Register the plugin on your panel in app/Providers/Filament/*PanelProvider.php:
    ->plugin(\Filaforge\FilamentChatAi\FilamentChatAiPlugin::make())

(Confirm the exact class/namespace against the package's src/ directory—changelog-only releases make this the fastest source of truth.)
  4. Configure your AI provider credentials (likely environment-driven). Check config/filament-chat-ai.php after publishing for the key names (e.g. API key, model, base URL).
  5. First use case: add the chat page/widget to a panel, open it in the admin UI, and send a single message to verify credentials and network egress from your server before wiring anything into domain logic.

Where to look first: README.md, then config/filament-chat-ai.php, then the plugin class and any Pages/ or Widgets/ directories. The v0.1.0...v0.1.2 diff is small—read it directly to see exactly what changed, since the notes don't summarize it.

Implementation Patterns

Given the sparse release notes, these are the patterns that fit a Filament AI-chat plugin and are safe to build on:

  • Plugin registration over manual page registration. Register via the plugin class so Filament handles navigation, authorization, and panel scoping. Avoid hand-registering the chat page—it bypasses plugin-level config.
  • Config-driven, env-backed credentials. Keep API keys in .env and reference them from the published config. Never hardcode keys in the panel provider or a page class.
  • Gate access with Filament's authorization. Wrap the chat page/widget behind canAccess() / policy checks or a role/permission so only intended admins can hit your AI provider (and burn tokens). Early-stage packages often ship permissive defaults—verify.
  • Keep chat pages inside the panel lifecycle. Use Filament's page mount(), form, and action patterns rather than a custom controller. This keeps Livewire state, validation, and notifications consistent with the rest of the panel.
  • Feature-flag rollout. Because the API is pre-1.0, guard the plugin behind a config flag (config('filament-chat-ai.enabled')) or a panel ->when() so you can disable it without a deploy.
  • Separate concerns for persistence. If the package stores conversations, keep any custom business fields (e.g. tenant/team scoping) in your own layer rather than assuming the package's schema is stable across 0.1.x releases.

Gotchas and Tips

  • No described changes in v0.1.2. The release is documented only as a changelog link. Before upgrading from v0.1.0, read the diff and test in a staging panel—pre-1.0 patches sometimes carry fixups that alter constructor signatures or config keys.
  • Pin versions. With 0.1.x and changelog-only releases, use composer require filaforge/filament-chat-ai:0.1.2 (exact) rather than ^0.1, to avoid silent behavior changes.
  • Verify namespace and asset tags against the repo. Changelog-only notes frequently accompany package renames or namespace reshuffles; confirm the plugin class FQCN and any publish tags from src/ before pasting snippets from older tutorials.
  • Token/cost exposure. AI chat hits a paid API from your server. Add rate limiting at the panel level, log usage, and set a sane default model in config—do not rely on the package default.
  • Egress and timeouts. Long AI responses can exceed Filament/Livewire request expectations. Check for configurable timeouts and, if none exist, keep prompts short or proxy through a queued job.
  • Debugging: if the chat UI loads but messages fail, check (a) the API key is actually read from config (clear config cache: php artisan config:clear), (b) server egress to the provider is allowed, and (c) the package's published config wasn't left at null defaults. Filament plugin issues are often just a stale php artisan optimize:clear.
  • Extension points to prefer: published config, the plugin class's fluent methods (if any), and Filament's own hooks (actions, page canAccess, panel ->when()). Avoid subclassing internal package classes until the API stabilizes at 1.0.
  • Watch the repo for v0.1.3+. This assessment is based on a thin release; re-check the changelog regularly, since the meaningful surface area is likely still being defined.
