Notes Laravel Package

capell-app/notes

A notes package for Capell that lets you create, manage, and display notes within your Laravel application, with a simple admin interface and support for attaching notes to your existing models.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for annotations/comments. This package covers a recurring, small-but-nonzero need: attaching dated, authored notes to arbitrary Eloquent models (orders, tickets, customers, content entries). The PM decision is whether to own a polymorphic notes table + trait + policy + basic UI, or inherit one. Typical in-house cost is 1–2 weeks plus permanent maintenance; that is the number to beat.
  • Feature scoping for internal collaboration surfaces. Supports decisions on shipping an "internal notes" panel on record detail pages — a common, low-risk way to reduce support back-and-forth and give CS/ops a place to record context.
  • Editorial/audit annotation use cases (e.g., Capell CMS content notes, moderation trails). Useful where the requirement is "leave a trace on a record," not "build a full activity feed."
  • Roadmap timing and dependency posture. The only signal in this release is cadence: v1.1.0-beta.47 (from beta.46) is a pre-release increment with no documented changes — the notes are a bare diff link. Treat 1.1.0 as stabilizing, not stable. Adoption should be scheduled behind a feature flag or spike, not as a launch-critical dependency.
  • Release-governance decisions. Because changelogs are opaque at this granularity, the decision that matters is version posture: pin the exact beta, review diffs at bump time, and budget a small amount of engineering time per upgrade rather than assuming semantic-versioning safety.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You need model-agnostic, polymorphic notes with minimal schema/plumbing work and can accept beta status.
  • You are already in the Capell/Laravel ecosystem and value consistency with the rest of the stack over a bespoke subsystem.
  • The team is small and has no appetite to own the annotation subsystem long-term.
  • Requirements are "author, timestamp, body, attach to record" — nothing more.

Look elsewhere or build in-house when:

  • You need support commitments, an LTS line, or a predictable deprecation policy. A beta-to-beta bump documented only by a compare link is a real governance cost.
  • Requirements extend to rich text, threading, @-mentions, per-note visibility, or notification fan-out — likely beyond a focused notes package.
  • Notes carry compliance weight (audit evidence, retention, export, immutability). Then you want to own the schema, indexing, and export path.
  • Multi-tenant isolation or fine-grained permissions are hard requirements and unverified for your version.
  • Your stack isn't Laravel, or the Capell conventions would fight your existing domain model.

Before adoption, verify directly against the tag: migrations/trait API, authorization hooks, soft-delete behavior, and whether beta.47 changed anything breaking relative to beta.46.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one paragraph): We evaluated a small Laravel package that lets any record carry internal notes — author, timestamp, body — without us building and maintaining that plumbing. It is a focused capability, cheap to try, and it removes a recurring "where do we log this?" gap in support and ops workflows. It is still in beta and its releases are sparsely documented, so the recommendation is a timeboxed spike (1–2 days) behind a feature flag, not a roadmap commitment. If the spike passes, expected saving is roughly one to two engineer-weeks of build plus ongoing ownership.

For engineering:

  • Install, pin the exact version (v1.1.0-beta.47); do not float the constraint while in beta.
  • Wrap usage behind a thin internal interface/service so the dependency can be swapped without touching domain code.
  • Add the trait to one or two low-risk models first; confirm migration behavior and index shape on a production-sized dataset.
  • Since beta.46 → beta.47 shipped with only a changelog link, review the diff at each bump and keep the upgrade a deliberate, tested step.
  • Exit criteria for the spike: notes render and authorize correctly, tenant/permission boundaries hold, and no schema or query-path surprises.

Risk statement: low integration risk, moderate dependency-maturity risk, and ongoing low-but-real maintenance cost driven by beta cadence.
