User Fields Laravel Package

zvizvi/user-fields

zvizvi/user-fields is a Laravel package for defining custom user profile fields without altering your users table. It provides traits and configuration to attach field values to users, validate input, and manage dynamic user fields with minimal setup.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • UX polish sprint / quick wins backlog. This is a one-dependency change that upgrades every user-selection surface (form selects, table columns, filters) in an admin panel. It competes for a slot in a polish sprint, not an architecture review.
  • Reducing mis-selection cost in identity-heavy workflows. In panels where operators repeatedly pick a user — ticket assignment, approval routing, task ownership, account management, scheduling — ambiguous or duplicated names (two "J. Smiths") cause wrong assignments, rework, and support tickets. Avatars shorten scan time and lower that error rate.
  • Build vs. buy → "adopt, then wrap." The package is MIT and trivially small in scope, so the decision is less buy-vs-build and more adopt-with-an-exit. Recommend adopting but wrapping it behind a project-level field/column class so the team can swap or fork it without touching call sites.
  • Roadmap signal, not a roadmap item. This should be treated as a design-system detail. It does not justify a platform bet, a migration, or a procurement cycle; it should never block a release.
  • Use cases to scope the pilot: internal admin panels, operations/support consoles, HR or people-ops tools, and multi-tenant admins where names repeat across tenants.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when all of these hold:

  • You are already on the admin framework this targets (Filament-style form/table/filter builders) and on a version it supports.
  • Your User model already exposes a reliable avatar/profile image URL, with a sensible fallback for missing photos.
  • The surface is internal-facing — operators who benefit from faster scanning — rather than public or customer-facing UI.
  • Failure is cheap: if the package breaks on a framework upgrade, you can drop it or inline ~20 lines of custom column/formatter within a sprint.
  • Your dependency policy tolerates small, single-maintainer packages behind a wrapper.

Look elsewhere (or build in-house) when:

  • Maintenance risk is unacceptable. 20 GitHub stars and one maintainer is a low-bus-factor signal; there is no vendor, SLA, or security response commitment. If your policy requires active-adoption thresholds, this fails.
  • You are on a different stack or a framework major version it doesn't track.
  • Your needs exceed avatars — presence indicators, org hierarchy, role badges, permissions context, or rich user cards. You'd outgrow this immediately.
  • Privacy/compliance is sensitive. Profile photos in admin tables are personal data; check GDPR/works-council posture and whether avatars are already approved for internal display.
  • Avatar images are large or user lists are long — image loading on wide selects can regress performance, which is a worse outcome than the UX gain.
  • You want zero new dependencies: a custom column/formatter is a small, owned alternative.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one paragraph): A small, free (MIT) add-on that puts profile photos next to names anywhere an operator picks or scans a user in our admin tools. The value is error reduction and speed in identity-heavy workflows — fewer wrong assignments where names are similar or duplicated — for roughly a day of integration effort and no new infrastructure. The trade-off is maintenance: it's a niche package with minimal community adoption and a single maintainer, so we adopt it behind an internal wrapper and keep a same-sprint fallback. Recommended as a low-cost UX win, not a strategic investment.

For engineering: One dependency, pinned. Please wrap it in a project-level field/column/filter class so call sites stay clean, add a fallback for users without avatars, and include it in the checklist for the next framework major upgrade. Estimate: under a day plus test coverage.

Risks and mitigations:

  • Maintenance/abandonment → wrapper + fallback + a defined exit (fork or inline) triggered by a breaking upgrade or six months without a compatible release.
  • Adoption signal is weak (≈20 stars) → timebox a pilot on one admin panel, measure perceived scan speed and mis-assignment reports, and decide on evidence rather than enthusiasm.
  • Privacy of photos → confirm internal-display approval before rollout; support an initials-based fallback if photos are restricted.
  • Performance → test against the largest real user list; constrain image sizes.
