Cortizol Laravel Package

zolteam/cortizol

Cortizol is a Laravel package by Zolteam that delivers a clean, configurable integration with an expressive API, sensible defaults, and seamless Laravel ecosystem support. Easy to install, customize, and extend in any PHP project.

Getting Started

  • Start by confirming the package is real, installable, and maintained. With 0 stars, 0 dependents, and a 0 score, there is no community validation. Open the GitLab repository and check: last commit date, open issues/MRs, composer.json (PHP and illuminate/* constraints), README, LICENSE, and whether a tests/ directory exists.
  • Minimal install: composer require zolteam/cortizol. If it follows Laravel package conventions, the service provider should be registered via extra.laravel.providers in its composer.json and auto-discovered. If not, add it manually to config/app.php under providers.
  • First place to look is src/ for the service provider. That file tells you what the package binds into the container, what config it merges, and what routes, migrations, commands, or views it loads.
  • Publish assets only after reading them. Verify the provider FQCN in the repo first, then run php artisan vendor:publish --provider="Vendor\Package\ServiceProvider". Do not guess the namespace.
  • First use case: install into a scratch Laravel app that matches your production major version, run the package's own test suite (composer test or vendor/bin/phpunit), and exercise the README's example. If there are no tests and no example, treat the package as a prototype and write a thin integration test around the behavior you need before touching a real project.

Implementation Patterns

  • Wrap the package behind your own interface and adapter. Given the lack of dependents, you want the ability to swap it out. Bind the package class behind App\Contracts\... in one of your service providers and inject the contract, not the package class directly.
  • Prefer constructor injection over facades. If the package exposes a facade, resolve the underlying class or your adapter through the container so tests stay fast and the dependency stays isolated to one binding.
  • Configuration-first integration: publish the config file, commit it to your repo, and drive behavior from config/cortizol.php (or whatever the package names it). Keep secrets in env vars and structural settings in the config file.
  • If the package ships migrations, publish them and review before running. Treat package migrations as your own schema: copy, adjust, and own them rather than relying on loadMigrationsFrom at runtime.
  • If it registers routes or middleware, gate them behind your app's auth and authorization. Do not expose package routes publicly by default.
  • For queue and event integration, check whether the package dispatches events. If it does, listen and log in staging first; unknown packages often dispatch higher-volume events than expected.
  • Pin versions deliberately: use a narrow constraint ("zolteam/cortizol": "1.0.*") in composer.json and commit composer.lock. With no dependents, there is no ecosystem pressure to keep it current, so upgrades should be a conscious decision.

Gotchas and Tips

  • Supply-chain risk is the headline. Zero stars, zero dependents, and a zero score mean no external code review. Read src/ end-to-end before production use and look specifically for network calls, eval, dynamic class loading, file writes, or shell execution in register/boot.
  • Auto-discovery may not be configured. If the provider is missing from extra.laravel.providers, you must register it manually; otherwise facades and bindings will be absent and you will get "target class does not exist" errors.
  • Laravel version constraints are the most common breakage. Compare illuminate/support in the package's composer.json against your app's Laravel version. A package built for Laravel 9 often installs cleanly on 10 or 11 and then fails at runtime due to container or facade changes.
  • Run php artisan config:cache and php artisan route:cache in staging after installing. Packages that call env() outside config files break under config caching. This is a frequent Laravel package bug.
  • Watch for publish-tag and config-key collisions. Confirm the package's config key is namespaced (e.g. cortizol.*) and will not overwrite an existing key in config/.
  • If there are no tests, write a smoke test: resolve the service provider, hit the main entry point, and assert no exceptions. Put it in CI so a future composer update fails loudly.
  • Debugging approach: composer show zolteam/cortizol to confirm the installed version and autoload paths, php artisan package:discover -v to confirm discovery, and dump(app()->getLoadedProviders()) to confirm registration.
  • Extension points are undocumented. Prefer decorating the package's class in your own container binding over forking. Fork only if the package is abandoned and your team accepts maintenance.
  • Check LICENSE. A GitLab repository without one is "all rights reserved" by default, which is a legal blocker for many organizations.
  • Budget for abandonment. With no dependents, there is no community to inherit maintenance. Keep the adapter boundary and an exit plan: a stub implementation you can swap in if the package stops working.
