Laravel Myinfo Sg Laravel Package

ziming/laravel-myinfo-sg

A Laravel package for integrating Singapore's MyInfo API. It streamlines Singpass OAuth authorization, token exchange, and retrieval of verified personal data, letting Laravel applications securely access government-verified user attributes with minimal boilerplate.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • Laravel-native package (service provider, config, facade-style usage) that wraps Singapore Singpass/MyInfo authorization and person-data retrieval. It fits a Laravel monolith or modular Laravel service that needs Singapore identity onboarding or MyInfo profile data.
  • It is an integration accelerator, not a complete identity platform. The application still owns session management, consent UX, authorization decisions, attribute mapping, data minimization, audit logging, and retention.
  • Strong fit for PHP/Laravel teams. Weaker fit for polyglot or microservice estates where Singpass/MyInfo should be a shared identity service rather than embedded in each app.

Integration feasibility

  • Feasible via Composer install, config publishing, client credentials, redirect URI, scopes, environment endpoints, and certificate/key configuration. A callback route/controller then exchanges the authorization code and retrieves/decrypts person data.
  • The package only solves part of the problem. Singpass/MyInfo onboarding, app registration, test identities, production certificates, and compliance review remain external dependencies and usually dominate the timeline.
  • Crypto and key management are the main engineering effort: JWT/JWE handling, certificate rotation, private-key custody, state/nonce validation, and safe logging.

Technical risk

  • Low adoption signal (16 stars), likely single-maintainer project. Bus factor, limited community support, and slow response to upstream API or certificate changes are material risks.
  • Release metadata shows 2026-10-24, which postdates the current date and should be verified against actual tags/changelog before relying on it.
  • Government identity flows are security-sensitive. Package defaults must be code-reviewed for token signature validation, issuer/audience checks, nonce/state handling, TLS verification, decryption failure behavior, and PII redaction.
  • Laravel/PHP version support and dependency constraints may lag, creating upgrade friction. MyInfo/Singpass API versions and attribute schemas also evolve independently of the package.

Key questions

  • Which Singpass/MyInfo API versions and environments are supported: test/prod, OIDC login, MyInfo v3/v4, or both?
  • Which Laravel and PHP versions are tested in CI, and what is the dependency support matrix?
  • How are certificates, private keys, JWKS rotation, and decryption keys handled and documented?
  • Does the package validate issuer, audience, nonce, state, token signatures, and expiry by default?
  • What is the maintenance model, security disclosure process, release cadence, and license/support position?
  • Are there tests, a sample app, and a documented production onboarding checklist?
  • Recommendation: use as an accelerator behind an internal adapter, with a fork/pin contingency, not as an unexamined strategic dependency.

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Best fit: server-rendered Laravel application with server-side sessions, Composer, Guzzle/Laravel HTTP client, and OpenSSL. For SPA or mobile clients, use a backend-for-frontend pattern so client secrets and decryption keys never reach the client.
  • If the estate is polyglot, isolate Singpass/MyInfo integration in one Laravel service or sidecar and expose a narrow internal API rather than duplicating crypto logic across apps.

Migration path

  • Wrap the package behind an internal interface: authorizeUrl, handleCallback, fetchPersonData, decryptPayload. This limits blast radius if the package is abandoned or replaced.
  • If a custom MyInfo integration exists, run the package in staging with the same test identities and compare payloads, consent behavior, and error paths. Cut over the callback route behind a feature flag.
  • If maintenance risk materializes, fork and pin a known-good commit, add integration tests around critical flows, and own patches.

Compatibility

  • Pin the package version and verify Laravel/PHP constraints plus transitive dependencies. Confirm required PHP extensions, especially OpenSSL.
  • Validate config-cache compatibility and secret injection through environment or a secret manager. Avoid committing certificates or private keys.
  • Confirm certificate formats, clock-skew tolerance, and endpoint configuration for each environment.

Sequencing

  1. Spike: install in a sandbox Laravel app, run the MyInfo test-environment flow with test identities, and review crypto/state/nonce handling.
  2. Design: define attribute mapping, consent copy, data retention, audit events, and error UX.
  3. Security review: key custody, token/session storage, CSRF/state protection, PII-safe logging, and failure behavior.
  4. Staging E2E: callback, token exchange, decryption, certificate rotation, timeout, and invalid-state cases.
  5. Production onboarding: Singpass/MyInfo registration, production certificates, go-live checklist, monitoring, and rollback plan.
  6. Post-launch: assign an internal owner, track upstream changes, and schedule dependency/security reviews.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Small code footprint but real external dependency risk. Budget quarterly review plus emergency patching for government API, certificate, or Laravel upgrade changes.
  • Assign an internal owner even if the package is community-maintained. Track MyInfo/Singpass notices, JWKS/certificate rotations, and API deprecations.

Support

  • Likely community-only support with no SLA. GitHub issues are not a production escalation path.
  • Production escalation should run through the organisation’s Singpass/MyInfo onboarding and government support channels, not the package author. Maintain an internal runbook for common failures.

Scaling

  • Mostly stateless outbound HTTPS calls; scale with application instances. Watch token-endpoint rate limits, timeouts, retries, and callback concurrency.
  • Cache JWKS/certificates with safe refresh. Do not cache personal data beyond consent and retention limits.
  • Session storage and callback throughput are more likely bottlenecks than the package itself.

Failure modes

  • Invalid/missing state or nonce: reject and restart the flow; treat as a login-CSRF risk.
  • Token exchange failure or expiry: retry once where safe, clear session, and present a restart path.
  • Decryption/signature failure from certificate rotation or wrong key: fail closed, alert, and never log PII or raw tokens.
  • MyInfo/Singpass outage or latency: apply timeouts and circuit breaking; define a fallback onboarding/KYC path if the business requires it.
  • Environment config drift: add startup validation for credentials, redirect URI, endpoints, and certificates.
  • Package abandonment or Laravel upgrade breakage: rely on the adapter/fork contingency and pinned version.

Ramp-up

  • One or two engineers with Laravel and OAuth/OIDC experience, plus a security reviewer. Expect roughly one to two weeks for spike and staging flow, excluding external Singpass/MyInfo onboarding lead time.
  • Document flow diagrams, key custody, consent language, attribute mapping, and support-facing error messages. Train support staff to troubleshoot without exposing personal data.
