Silex Capsule Laravel Package

ziadoz/silex-capsule

Integrates Laravel's Illuminate Capsule database layer into Silex, giving you Fluent and Eloquent ORM support plus the query builder without booting a full Laravel app. Configure a connection and start querying in minutes.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Decommission vs. maintain, not build vs. buy. This package only matters inside one decision: whether a legacy Silex service gets extended or retired. Silex reached end-of-life in mid-2018 and this provider was last released in November 2017 and is now archived, so the package is evidence for the "retire" path rather than an option on the roadmap.
  • Migration sequencing. If we still run a Silex app with Eloquent, this dependency is a concrete blocker to inventory: it pins us to PHP 5.6/7.x-era illuminate/database (5.x), which in turn caps our PHP runtime upgrade. That is a line item in any "upgrade PHP" or "patch CVEs" plan.
  • Scoping modernization work. Because the package is a thin service provider (wiring Laravel's Capsule\Manager into Silex's Pimple container), replacing it is a small, well-bounded task — useful for sizing a migration spike rather than commissioning a project.
  • Reference, not dependency. The only forward-looking use is as a reading reference if we need to bootstrap Eloquent's Capsule inside a non-Laravel PSR-11 container of our own. Fifteen stars, one maintainer, no releases in seven-plus years: treat it as sample code, never as a dependency.
  • It does not inform feature or roadmap prioritization. There is no capability here we would build a product decision on; it is plumbing.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt only under a narrow, uncomfortable set of conditions:

  • You are maintaining an existing Silex application that already uses Eloquent, on a pinned PHP 7.x runtime, and you need the Capsule bootstrap to keep it running until the migration lands. Even then, prefer vendoring or copying the ~100 lines over adding a dependency.
  • You need a worked example of registering Capsule\Manager with a Pimple container — for a spike, a proof of concept, or a one-off internal tool.

Look elsewhere — or rather, do not adopt — when:

  • Anything new is being built. Use Laravel (full framework or Laravel Zero for a micro-service footprint), or Symfony with Doctrine ORM or a maintained Eloquent bundle. Do not start a 2020s codebase on an archived 2017 provider for an abandoned framework.
  • You need support, security patching, or PHP 8.x compatibility. Archived means no CVE response, no compatibility fixes, and no upstream path. There is no maintainer to escalate to.
  • You need more than the happy path — multiple connections, migrations, model events tied to a framework lifecycle, queue/console integration. The provider does not carry that weight; you would be writing it yourself anyway.
  • You want community assurance. Fifteen stars and a single author is below any reasonable threshold for third-party dependency risk, regardless of the MIT license.

The honest framing for the team: this is a candidate for replacement, with an estimated effort measured in hours, not a candidate for adoption.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is not an investment decision; it is technical debt with a known, small payoff. The package is archived, unmaintained, and tied to a framework that has been end-of-life since 2018. It carries no direct licensing cost, but it locks part of our stack to an unsupported PHP runtime, which is where the real risk sits — unpatched security exposure and rising cost to hire for or reason about the stack. Recommendation: do not adopt; fold its removal into the existing runtime-upgrade or Silex-retirement work.

For engineering: The surface area is tiny — a service provider that registers Laravel's Capsule\Manager with Silex's container. That is good news twice over: the dependency is easy to remove (a day or less to reimplement or inline), and it hides no magic we would miss. The risk is not lock-in, it is staleness: pinned Eloquent 5.x, no PHP 8 support, no security response, no maintainer. If we must keep it alive short-term, vendor the code and own it explicitly; do not pull it in fresh. Anything greenfield goes to Laravel or Symfony, not here.

The one-line ask: approve removal as part of the next runtime upgrade, and treat any remaining Silex surface as migration scope rather than maintenance scope.
