zeuxisoo/slim-eloquent
Brings Laravel's Eloquent ORM to Slim Framework, letting Slim applications use ActiveRecord-style models, relationships, and the fluent query builder without the full Laravel stack. Simple configuration for database connections and a familiar, expressive API for everyday persistence.
Architecture fit. This package is a thin bridge that boots Illuminate\Database\Capsule\Manager inside a Slim application and exposes Eloquent models to Slim routes. That is architecturally useful only if we have Slim services in the estate. For a Laravel-primary organization, the fit is poor by definition: Laravel already ships Eloquent with service-provider wiring, connection pooling config, pagination, model events, factories, and migrations. Adding this package to a Laravel app buys nothing and creates a second, competing bootstrap path for the same ORM.
The realistic value proposition is cross-framework consistency: if we run Slim microservices alongside Laravel monoliths, this package lets both use the same Active Record models, migrations, and query builder idioms instead of maintaining a second ORM (Doctrine, PDO wrappers, etc.). That is a genuine engineering-consistency argument, but it is an argument for a handful of services, not for the platform.
Integration feasibility. Mechanically straightforward — Composer install, instantiate capsule, add connection config, register models. There is no Laravel service provider, no auto-discovery, no config publishing; wiring is manual and lives in our Slim bootstrap. That is roughly 30–60 lines of glue we would own forever. The same result is achievable with first-party illuminate/database directly, which is what this package wraps; the wrapper saves little and adds a dependency.
Technical risk. High, driven by project health rather than code complexity:
illuminate/database major versions track framework releases, so the wrapper's version constraints are the binding risk.illuminate/* versions and inherit their CVEs.Key questions.
illuminate/database major does the package's latest tag constrain us to, and does that match our Laravel version?Stack fit. Adopt only in a Slim context. Do not install in Laravel applications — it is redundant and introduces ambiguity about which Eloquent bootstrap is authoritative. If the estate is Laravel-only, close this evaluation as "not applicable" and move on.
Migration path. The package is not a migration vehicle; Eloquent models and migrations are portable between Laravel and Capsule with minor caveats (config-driven connections, no artisan). The migration we would actually perform is from whatever ORM the Slim services use today to Eloquent, which is a per-service refactor, not a package adoption task.
Compatibility. Verify three things before any pilot: supported Slim major (2/3 vs 4), supported PHP version against our runtime baseline, and the illuminate/database constraint against our Laravel version. If the package pins an older Illuminate major, treat it as incompatible with a modernized estate — that single constraint will block us.
Sequencing.
platform/eloquent-bootstrap package we own, pinned to first-party illuminate/database, and skip this dependency entirely.artisan outside Laravel — decide the runner).Recommendation. Prefer the internal bootstrap package over zeuxisoo/slim-eloquent. The functional delta is negligible and we remove single-maintainer abandonment risk from the critical data path.
Maintenance. We own the integration glue regardless of choice; the package only shifts a fraction of that ownership to a volunteer maintainer with no downstream users. Budget ongoing work for: Illuminate major upgrades, Slim major upgrades, and security patching of the ORM itself — none of which the wrapper insulates us from.
Support. No vendor, no SLA, no maintainer capacity signal. Internal support burden falls on platform engineering, who will be reading the package source to answer questions. Escalation path is a fork.
Scaling. The package does not affect scaling characteristics; Eloquent and the underlying PDO connections do. The real scaling constraints to plan for are connection management per service instance (Capsule uses static/global state, which complicates multi-tenant or multi-connection setups), N+1 query behavior typical of Active Record, and the absence of Laravel's connection pooling ergonomics outside the framework.
Failure modes.
Ramp-up. Low for engineers with Laravel experience; most of the learning is un-learning framework conveniences (no artisan, no auto-discovery, manual container wiring). Expect a day of onboarding per engineer plus a written runbook. The larger cost is organizational: convincing teams that Eloquent outside Laravel is a supported pattern, and enforcing one bootstrap implementation.
Bottom line. Low strategic value for a Laravel-centric shop, thin fit outside Slim, and unfavorable project-health signals. Approve as a bounded spike only; the default decision should be to build a small internal capsule bootstrap on first-party illuminate/database and keep this dependency off the critical data path.
