zendframework/zend-test
Zend Test provides PHPUnit integration and testing helpers for Zend Framework applications, including MVC and controller test cases, route assertions, DOM and response checks, redirects, headers, and common test utilities.
Architecture fit: Poor to nonexistent for a Laravel codebase. zendframework/zend-test is not a generic testing utility — it is a thin PHPUnit harness bound to the Zend Framework 2 MVC runtime (Zend\Mvc\Application, Zend\ServiceManager, Zend\EventManager, Zend\Router). Its primary surface is AbstractHttpControllerTestCase / AbstractConsoleControllerTestCase and a DbAdapterTrait, all of which assume they own application bootstrap. Laravel owns bootstrap through Illuminate\Foundation\Testing\TestCase, its service container, and the HTTP kernel. The two cannot both be the bootstrapping authority in one process, and the package offers nothing Laravel's test suite does not already provide natively (MakesHttpRequests, RefreshDatabase, container-bound mocks, assertDatabaseHas, etc.).
Integration feasibility: Technically installable, practically a dead end. Composer will resolve it only if its constraints are satisfiable — the 3.x line pins php ^5.6 || ^7.0 and a PHPUnit 4/5/6-era API. On any modern Laravel baseline (PHP 8.1+, PHPUnit 10/11 or Pest), this is a hard constraint conflict, not a soft one. Forcing resolution would mean downgrading PHP or running a parallel, second MVC stack purely to satisfy test infrastructure — an unacceptable trade for zero functional gain.
Technical risk: High and unbounded. The package is archived, last released 2019-06-11, and receives no security patches; the entire zendframework/* namespace was superseded by laminas/*. There is no maintainer to escalate to, no PHP 8 support, and no path to PHPUnit modernization. A test-only dependency is still a supply-chain dependency: it will sit in the lockfile, generate deprecation noise, and eventually block unrelated framework upgrades.
Key questions:
Recommendation: Do not adopt. The 1.6 opportunity score and archived status are consistent with the technical picture.
Stack fit: None for Laravel. Laravel's testing stack is opinionated and complete: PHPUnit or Pest as runner, Illuminate\Foundation\Testing\TestCase for bootstrap, RefreshDatabase/DatabaseTransactions for persistence isolation, Http fakes and container swaps for collaborator isolation, and Dusk for browser flows. zend-test would be a foreign body with overlapping responsibilities and no shared abstractions.
Migration path: If the driver is a legacy ZF2 test suite rather than a Laravel need, the correct first hop is laminas/laminas-test, the maintained successor — same API, active maintenance, PHP 8 support. That buys time without a rewrite. The second hop, when the application itself moves to Laravel, is a test-by-test port:
AbstractHttpControllerTestCase dispatch assertions → Laravel feature tests using $this->get()/post() and assertOk(), assertRedirect(), assertSee().DbAdapterTrait fixtures → RefreshDatabase plus model factories and seeders.$this->mock() / $this->instance() against Laravel's container, or facade fakes.Route::getRoutes() inspection and Event::fake().Compatibility: Effectively incompatible on both axes. PHP version constraints conflict with any current Laravel release; PHPUnit API constraints conflict with Laravel 10/11's PHPUnit 10/11 requirement. There is no supported combination of Laravel LTS + zend-test that does not involve degrading the runtime.
Sequencing:
laminas/laminas-test in the legacy app only, isolated to that repository, and freeze new test authoring on it.zendframework/* from all lockfiles and add a CI policy check preventing reintroduction.Maintenance: Archived with no releases since June 2019 and no maintainer. BSD-3-Clause permits forking, but a fork means the team inherits maintenance of an MVC test harness for a framework it does not use — an open-ended cost with no product upside.
Support: No upstream support channel, no security advisories will be issued, and community knowledge has migrated to Laminas. Any incident becomes an internal research project rather than a vendor or community escalation.
Scaling: Poor even in its native habitat. The controller test case bootstraps a full MVC application per test class, which is inherently slower than Laravel's shared bootstrap; there is no built-in parallelization story, and paratest compatibility on a 2019-era PHPUnit line is limited. Test suite wall-clock time grows linearly with module count.
Failure modes:
Ramp-up: Near zero for any Laravel developer already fluent in PHPUnit, and that is the problem: there is no transferable skill. The only thing to learn is a foreign application bootstrap model that the team will never use again. Every hour spent on it is a write-off.
Net TPM position: Reject for Laravel. If legacy ZF2 test coverage is the real requirement, route through laminas/laminas-test as a time-boxed bridge and fund the port to Laravel's native testing stack as part of the application migration, not as a separate workstream.
