Laravel Duitnow Laravel Package

zarulizham/laravel-duitnow

A Laravel wrapper for DuitNow, Malaysia's real-time payment network. It simplifies initiating DuitNow payments, handling responses, and integrating with PayNet's DuitNow APIs so you can accept instant bank transfers in your Laravel app without building the integration yourself.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • Laravel service-provider/facade package pattern — fits Laravel monoliths and Laravel-based services. It is a thin HTTP wrapper over a DuitNow acquirer/bank API, not a payment orchestration layer.
  • DuitNow is PayNet's national real-time payments rail (Transfer, QR, Request, Direct Debit). Integrations are typically brokered through a participating bank/acquirer, so the wrapper is bound to one specific upstream contract and is not necessarily portable across acquirers.
  • Money movement must be judged against your ledger, reconciliation, idempotency, and webhook infrastructure — none of which a thin wrapper typically provides.

Integration feasibility

  • Composer-installable and MIT licensed — low legal friction to evaluate, fork, or vendor.
  • Low adoption (10 stars, score 0.14) means little production evidence; the source must be read end-to-end before trusting it on a payment path.
  • Real feasibility is gated by onboarding: PayNet participation via a bank/acquirer, sandbox access, mTLS certificates, and certification. The package cannot shortcut any of this.

Technical risk

  • Concentration risk: single maintainer, last release 2024-08-05, no visible roadmap. Low-maintenance dependencies on revenue-critical paths are a material risk.
  • Thin-wrapper risk: commonly omits idempotency keys, retry semantics, webhook signature verification, and reconciliation helpers — precisely the parts that fail in production.
  • API drift: upstream bank/PayNet contracts change; an unmaintained wrapper will not track them.
  • Credential/cert handling must be verified — secrets and mTLS certs should live in a vault, not .env/config.
  • MIT license is fine; still audit the transitive dependency tree.

Key questions

  • Which acquirer/bank API does this target, and which DuitNow products (Transfer, QR, Request, Direct Debit)?
  • Is there a sandbox/test mode that matches the production contract?
  • How are webhooks received and verified? Is there replay protection?
  • Does it support idempotency keys and safe retries?
  • Which Laravel/PHP versions are supported, and is there a test suite?
  • What is the security disclosure process and the maintainer's commitment?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Laravel + PHP via Composer. Confirm version constraints against your framework version; fits a standard Laravel service with queue and HTTP-client infrastructure.
  • Use it behind your own payment abstraction/interface so the wrapper can be swapped or forked without touching domain code.

Migration path

  • Replacing an existing gateway: implement behind a PaymentGateway interface, run parallel in sandbox, then cut over behind a feature flag.
  • Greenfield: adopt as the transport layer only, and build idempotency, state machine, and reconciliation yourselves.

Compatibility

  • Verify Laravel/PHP constraints, HTTP-client (Guzzle) version, and TLS/certificate requirements.
  • Assume pinning: lock the exact version and vendor/fork the package; avoid floating constraints.

Sequencing

  1. Onboarding with bank/acquirer and PayNet sandbox credentials.
  2. Source review plus security/compliance assessment.
  3. Fork or vendor the package; add missing idempotency and webhook handling.
  4. Build integration behind an abstraction; write contract tests against sandbox.
  5. Acquirer certification; production cutover with feature flag and rollback plan.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Treat as a fork candidate. Budget for ownership: monitor upstream, patch dependencies, track bank API changes.
  • Pin versions; add Dependabot/Renovate and a security review gate.

Support

  • Community-only, no SLA, single maintainer. It cannot be a single point of failure for a revenue-critical path; assign an internal owner and keep a direct-API fallback.

Scaling

  • Scaling is dominated by the upstream bank API (rate limits, latency), not the wrapper. Process asynchronously via queues with timeouts, backoff, and circuit breakers.
  • Watch connection pooling and mTLS handshake overhead under load.

Failure modes

  • Timeouts/ambiguous responses → duplicate payments without idempotency.
  • Lost or unverified webhooks → reconciliation gaps.
  • Certificate expiry and credential rotation.
  • Upstream API breaking changes with no wrapper update.
  • Silent package abandonment.

Ramp-up

  • Requires DuitNow domain knowledge (RTP semantics, request-for-payment, QR) plus the specific acquirer's API docs. Plan onboarding time for engineering, ops, and compliance.
  • Add runbooks for payment failures, reconciliation, and manual settlement.
