Features Bundle Laravel Package

yannickl88/features-bundle

Symfony bundle for adding feature flags to your application. Define features, enable or disable them per environment, and gate code paths with simple checks for safer rollouts, gradual releases, and controlled deployments.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Decoupling deploy from release. Feature tags let you ship code dark and turn capability on per environment or tenant, which shortens release cycles and reduces rollback risk. This is the core PM-level argument for any flagging mechanism.
  • Progressive rollout and kill switches. Server-side tags support percentage- or segment-based exposure and an emergency off-switch without a redeploy — directly relevant to launch plans, incident response, and SLA commitments.
  • Build vs buy for flagging infrastructure. This package represents the "thin, self-hosted, config-driven tags" end of the spectrum. Evaluating it forces a useful decision: do we need a commodity boolean gate (build/vendor cheaply) or a product-grade platform with targeting rules, experiment statistics, audit trails, and SDKs (buy)?
  • Entitlement and packaging experiments. Tags can model plan-based feature availability (per-tenant flags), useful for pricing/packaging tests and beta cohorts without branching the codebase.
  • Roadmap sequencing. Knowing flagging is a one-day capability rather than a quarterly initiative changes prioritization — it removes "we can't safely launch X" from the blocker list and lets PMs commit to staged rollouts.
  • Trunk-based development policy. A supported tag mechanism is a precondition for asking engineering to stop maintaining long-lived release branches.

Caveat that shapes every decision above: the package is a Symfony bundle, not Laravel-compatible, has 19 stars, 0 dependents, and a single-maintainer release history (last release June 2024). Its opportunity signal is low (23.68), meaning the market has already solved this problem many times over. Treat it as a reference implementation, not a platform bet.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when all of the following hold:

  • The codebase is Symfony/PHP and already comfortable with bundle registration and service container configuration — this is not droppable into Laravel, and adapting it costs more than writing your own.
  • You need server-side boolean tags only: on/off per environment, no user-level targeting, no percentage bucketing, no experiment assignment or metric analysis.
  • Flag volume is small and infrastructurally boring (tens, not thousands), and flags can live alongside config rather than in a dedicated admin system.
  • The team accepts vendoring or forking as the maintenance model, given the low star count, zero dependents, and single-maintainer risk. Budget a named owner and a fork in your repo.
  • You want zero external dependency and no per-seat SaaS cost for a capability that is not a differentiator for your business.
  • You are prototyping and want a working pattern to copy rather than a dependency to inherit.

Look elsewhere (or build in-house, ~1–2 days) when:

  • You are on Laravel — the framework mismatch alone disqualifies it; use a config-driven flag service or a first-party package.
  • You need targeting rules, user segmentation, percentage rollouts, or A/B experiment statistics — this is the actual value in the category and this package does not provide it.
  • You need audit trails, approval workflows, or RBAC on who can flip a flag — a compliance and blast-radius requirement in regulated or multi-team environments.
  • You have many teams or many flags and need a UI, flag lifecycle/cleanup discipline, and stale-flag detection.
  • You need vendor-backed reliability, SLAs, or edge/low-latency evaluation at scale.
  • You expect ongoing upstream maintenance — 19 stars and no dependents means you are effectively the maintainer.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: Feature flags are table stakes, not a differentiator, and this package is a free, MIT-licensed, self-hosted way to get basic on/off gating without a SaaS contract. The strategic value is speed and safety — shipping dark, ramping exposure, and killing a bad release without a redeploy. But it is a commodity capability with a thin maintenance story (one maintainer, 19 stars, no downstream dependents, last release mid-2024), so the recommendation is to adopt the pattern rather than the dependency: either build a small internal flag service or buy a managed platform if we need targeting, experiments, or audit. Cost of the build path is measured in days, not quarters; cost of the buy path is per-seat and worth it only once flags become cross-team infrastructure.

To engineering: This is a Symfony bundle — do not evaluate it for Laravel work. If we adopt anything here, we fork it, own it, and keep it to environment-scoped booleans. The realistic decision is: (a) 1–2 days to implement a config-plus-cache flag service with a clean interface, or (b) a managed provider if we need targeting and experiment analysis. Whichever we choose, we should design the flag interface now so a swap later is a one-file change, and we should add stale-flag cleanup to the definition of done — flag debt is the real long-term cost, not the library.
