Php Badge Laravel Package

yakeing/php_badge

A lightweight PHP library for generating SVG badges for READMEs, CI status, versions, downloads, and custom labels. Create shields-style badges with simple PHP calls and no external badge services.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • Single-purpose SVG string builder — framework-agnostic, no service provider, no config file, no persistence layer. This is a leaf utility dependency, not infrastructure.
  • Fits Laravel cleanly as a wrapped service (App\Support\BadgeRenderer) rather than a facade. It should never leak into domain code.
  • Two viable placements: build-time (generating static badges for READMEs, docs, dashboards) or request-time (a /badge/{status}.svg endpoint). The former is the lower-risk default.

Integration feasibility

  • composer require yakeing/php_badge is the entire install. Real gate is the PHP version constraint in composer.json — the package predates the PHP 8 ecosystem and likely targets ^7.x.
  • If the constraint blocks PHP 8.2/8.3, the options are --ignore-platform-reqs (unacceptable in CI), a fork with a widened constraint, or exclusion. This must be resolved in a spike, not assumed.
  • Verify autoload type (PSR-4 vs classmap) and whether any extension (GD, mbstring) is required.

Technical risk

  • Abandoned since 2020-01-01, archived. No CVE response, no compatibility patches. Treat upstream as permanently frozen.
  • MPL-2.0 — file-level copyleft. Safe for internal/closed use; any modifications to MPL-licensed files must be published. Acceptable, but legal should confirm before a fork is distributed.
  • Likely zero runtime dependencies, which keeps the attack surface small and the SCA noise low.
  • SVG injection is the material security concern. Badge text is user-controlled in most realistic uses; unescaped text in <text> yields stored XSS if the SVG is served same-origin. Must audit escaping before any user-facing endpoint.
  • Visual risk: if fonts are not bundled, text width is computed against system font metrics and will drift across environments.

Key questions

  1. Does composer.json permit PHP 8.2/8.3, and does it emit deprecations under E_ALL?
  2. Is badge text HTML/SVG-escaped in output?
  3. Are fonts bundled, or does output depend on the host's font stack?
  4. Is our use case build-time or request-time? (Changes the risk tier entirely.)
  5. Are we prepared to fork and own it, or must it remain unmodified?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • No Laravel coupling required. One thin adapter class with an interface (BadgeRenderer::render(array $params): string) keeps the vendor call site to a single line.
  • Serve via response($svg, 200, ['Content-Type' => 'image/svg+xml']). Add Cache-Control and a CSP img-src/sandbox consideration if served same-origin.

Migration path

  • Design for replacement on day one: interface + config flag (badges.driver = php_badge | shields | fork). Alternatives include shields.io/staticbadge endpoints, badgen, or a ~200-line internal SVG builder.
  • If the PHP constraint fails, the migration path is a fork under packages/php_badge with a private VCS entry, not a workaround in CI.

Compatibility

  • Pin the exact version; do not use a caret range on an archived package.
  • Add to composer audit and Renovate/Dependabot ignore lists so the frozen state is explicit.
  • Snapshot-test rendered SVG output so a future PHP upgrade surfaces font/metric drift as a test failure rather than a visual regression.

Sequencing

  1. Spike (≤1 day): install in a scratch Laravel app on PHP 8.3, render 5–10 representative badges, capture deprecations and output.
  2. Decision gate: require as-is / fork / reject. Escalation point for the fork decision.
  3. Harden (if adopted): verify escaping, add PHP 8 CI matrix on the fork, lock constraint.
  4. Wrap: interface + adapter + config driver flag.
  5. Ship build-time first (docs/README generation), then evaluate a cached request-time endpoint.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Effectively zero upstream. Every fix is ours. Budget 1–2 engineer-days per year for PHP-version compatibility, or classify as a frozen utility with an accepted-obsolescence note in the dependency inventory.
  • Low churn: the SVG spec and badge conventions are stable, so the cost of ownership is mostly "keep it installable," not "keep it current."

Support

  • None. No issue triage, no security advisories. The team owns the SLA.
  • Escalation is binary: patch the fork in-house, or swap drivers. Have the swap path documented before adoption, not after an incident.

Scaling

  • SVG generation is CPU-trivial and fully deterministic. Cache on a hash of the badge parameters (file or Redis) and this is effectively free at any realistic volume.
  • Advantage over shields.io: no outbound network dependency, no third-party rate limits, no availability coupling.
  • Do not regenerate per request in a hot path — cache or pre-generate at build time.

Failure modes

  • Fatal: TypeError/removed-function errors after a PHP minor upgrade on the abandoned codebase.
  • Security: unescaped badge text → XSS when served same-origin.
  • Silent visual: font metric drift causing clipped or overflowing text across environments.
  • Install: platform requirement mismatch breaking composer install in CI for everyone.
  • Mitigations: pinned version, snapshot tests, escaping audit, and a documented fork procedure.

Ramp-up

  • Low. Small API surface; a mid-level engineer is productive in an afternoon. The learning curve is the SVG output shape and caching strategy, not the library.
  • Risk is organizational, not technical: an archived dependency needs a named owner, otherwise it becomes invisible debt.
