yajra/laravel-datatables-scout
Integrates Laravel Scout's full-text search with yajra/laravel-datatables, letting DataTables queries run through Scout engines like Algolia, Meilisearch, or the database driver. Adds a scout driver so searchable models stay filterable and sortable.
Architecture fit. The package is a thin adapter, not a platform: it swaps the DataTables global search term from an SQL LIKE to a Laravel Scout query while leaving column filters, ordering, pagination, and Eloquent hydration untouched. Architecturally it is a one-method opt-in (->withScout()) on an existing yajra/laravel-datatables-oracle builder. It fits cleanly only in a system that already runs both DataTables server-side endpoints and a configured Scout engine — it adds no value, and cannot compensate, if either is missing. Treat it as glue between two dependencies we already own, not as a search capability we acquire.
Integration feasibility. Low engineering effort per endpoint (hours, not weeks) after prerequisites are green: a live server-side DataTables endpoint, Scout installed with a driver in config/scout.php, and a Searchable model whose Model::search('term') returns sensible results in tinker. The real cost sits outside the package — engine selection, index design, toSearchableArray() shaping, and a re-import runbook. Composer install plus auto-discovery, then one method call on a low-risk read-only table.
Technical risk. Concentrated and identifiable:
src/ is small enough to vendor into packages/ in half a day under MIT.src/.recordsTotal/recordsFiltered mismatch causing visible-but-wrong pagination; Scout relevance order lost after Eloquent hydrates WHERE id IN (...); stale or queued-but-unimported indexes indistinguishable from "no results."Key questions to resolve before committing.
withScout().)src/.)recordsTotal and recordsFiltered computed, and what is the cost of the unfiltered count on our largest tables?filterableAttributes, Algolia attributesForFaceting), and is our chosen engine in that set?Stack fit. Laravel + yajra/laravel-datatables-oracle + laravel/scout + a driver (Meilisearch, Algolia, Typesense, TNTSearch, or database). The adapter is a no-op unless all three prerequisites are already working; the correct first action is a tinker validation of Model::search('term')->get(), not a composer install.
Migration path. Incremental, table by table, never globally. Do not register the plugin in a base controller — apply it per endpoint so the blast radius of a bug is one screen and the plain Eloquent path remains an exercisable fallback. Wrap adoption behind a single SearchStrategy seam in application code (a method that either calls the plugin or returns the plain builder), gated by a config or feature flag. This converts "we adopted a fragile plugin" into "we can drop it in an afternoon," which is the highest-value pattern given the package's adoption level.
Compatibility. Pin the plugin to an exact version ("x.y.z"), commit the lockfile, and treat any DataTables or Scout upgrade as a joint change requiring a re-read of src/ and a re-run of the comparison test suite. If an upgrade blocks on upstream, MIT permits forking into packages/; budget the half-day.
Sequencing.
database Scout driver to remove the engine from the loop and keep CI fast; swap to Meilisearch/Algolia only when validating relevance, not correctness.->withScout() on one read-only table (users, customers, audit log) with a modest set of searchable fields.Maintenance. We own this de facto. Upstream is a single maintainer with negligible adoption signal; plan for the fork, keep the seam, pin versions, and document the plugin's version matrix in-repo. Maintenance burden is small but nonzero: each DataTables, Scout, or engine upgrade is a coordination point.
Support. No vendor SLA, community-only troubleshooting. Operationalise the debugging order so on-call can resolve it without the original author: (1) does Model::search('term') work in tinker, (2) is the index populated and current, (3) is the term reaching Scout (log search.value, temporarily instrument the plugin), (4) are the counts correct. Roughly 90% of incidents resolve at step 1.
Scaling. The point of the package: offload global search to a dedicated index and keep the UI responsive on large datasets. Real scaling costs to watch:
recordsTotal runs against the database on every request — cache it where the underlying set is stable.toSearchableArray() to the columns the table actually displays.Failure modes to instrument explicitly.
toSearchableArray() change and monitor index lag.recordsTotal and recordsFiltered in tests.Ramp-up. Low for engineers already fluent in DataTables and Scout — the plugin's surface is a single method, and the learning is concentrated in model configuration (searchable(), toSearchableArray(), shouldBeSearchable()) and engine configuration (config/scout.php), not in the adapter itself. Budget one to two engineer-days for the first screen inclusive of the comparison test harness, and add a short internal runbook covering re-import, fallback behaviour, and the debugging order. Anything deeper than the documented extension points (filterColumn, orderColumn, model searchable methods) means forking the small src/ — a realistic move here, not a last resort.
