Download Library Bundle Laravel Package

xrow/download-library-bundle

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature scoping for bulk asset export. This bundle addresses a recurring, concrete user need: letting an editor select a subtree (a folder/branch of a media or content tree) and receive a single ZIP of the images underneath it. That maps directly to "download this gallery," "send me the assets for this campaign," or "export this product's imagery" — features that show up in CMS, DAM, and catalog admin surfaces.
  • Build vs. buy signal — heavily weighted toward build. The capability is narrow and well-bounded (tree walk → filter image MIME types → stream a ZIP). At this scope, a 1–3 day in-house implementation is usually cheaper over 12 months than taking on an unaudited third-party dependency, especially one with no release cadence to observe.
  • Roadmap prioritization input. The existence of a purpose-built bundle from a CMS agency (xrow works primarily in the eZ Platform / Ibexa ecosystem) is evidence that this is a real, recurring ask in Symfony-based content platforms — not a hypothetical. Worth a line in the backlog even if the package itself is not adopted.
  • Platform-fit correction. Despite the framing, the -bundle suffix and the vendor's history indicate this is a Symfony bundle, likely targeting Ibexa/eZ content trees — not a Laravel package. That materially changes the decision: in a Laravel codebase you would be porting concepts, not installing code.
  • Internal tooling / migration use cases. ZIP-of-subtree is also useful for one-off content migrations, editorial handoffs to agencies, and offline review of an image library — low-glamour, high-friction work that is often under-scoped.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it (as reference, at most) when:

  • You are on a Symfony-based CMS — particularly Ibexa/eZ Platform — where "subtree" is a first-class content concept and this bundle's assumptions actually hold.
  • You need a throwaway internal prototype to validate that bulk-download is a demanded feature before investing in a proper implementation.
  • You want to read the source for how the vendor handles tree traversal, image filtering, and ZIP response streaming — that reading is genuinely useful even if you never install it.

Look elsewhere — or build — when:

  • You are on Laravel. Different framework, different autoloading, different HTTP/response conventions. Adoption cost likely exceeds implementation cost.
  • You need any maintenance or security assurance. Zero stars, zero dependents, and a 0.03 score mean no community validation, no observable issue triage, and no downstream users surfacing breakage. Treat it as unmaintained by default until proven otherwise.
  • The feature is user-facing or revenue-adjacent. You will want tests, a documented route contract, permission checks on subtree access (critical — a naive implementation can leak assets across tenants or unpublished content), and size/rate limits. None of that is evidenced here.
  • You need to handle large libraries. Naive ZIP assembly in the request cycle blows past PHP memory_limit and gateway timeouts. You need streaming (ZipStream-style) or an async job with a signed download URL. Verify the bundle does this before trusting it; assume it does not.
  • You require license and provenance review. Confirm the license, confirm the vendor's support posture, and pin a commit hash if you fork. A package with no releases and no dependents is a fork-and-own proposition, not a dependency.

Recommended default: do not adopt. Treat this repository as a design reference and ship an in-house endpoint.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (30 seconds): We evaluated an open-source component that packages up "download every image in a folder as one ZIP file." The capability is real and users ask for it, but the component itself is effectively unmaintained — no users, no community, no support commitment — and it targets a different PHP framework than ours. Recommendation: do not take the dependency. The feature is small enough to build ourselves in roughly one to three engineering days, which removes the supply-chain and maintenance risk entirely. Net: we get the feature, we own it, and we avoid a long-term liability.

For engineering (the actual decision):

  • This is a Symfony bundle (Ibexa/eZ lineage), not a Laravel package. Port the pattern; don't vendor the code.
  • The pattern is straightforward: authorize the caller against the subtree, walk it, filter to image types, and stream the archive rather than buffering it in memory.
  • Non-negotiables in our implementation: per-subtree authorization (watch for cross-tenant and unpublished-content leakage), explicit size and count caps, rate limiting, streaming output or an async job with signed URLs, and a test suite covering empty subtrees, deep nesting, and mixed file types.
  • Zero community signal (0 stars, 0 dependents) means we would be the sole maintainer of a fork from day one. That is a worse position than owning 150 lines we wrote and understand.

Bottom line: validate the demand, copy the idea, skip the dependency.
