Filelib Laravel Package

xi/filelib

xi/filelib is a file management library for Laravel that streamlines uploads, storage, and manipulation. It offers a clean, consistent API for working with files across disks, plus helpers for validation, naming, and retrieval, cutting boilerplate so you can manage assets quickly.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for file handling: file upload, storage, and image transformation are commodity capabilities. This package is a reference design, not a purchase decision — the useful takeaway is its separation of a storage layer from file metadata/entities, and a pluggable image-transformation step. Use it to sanity-check our own domain model before we commit engineering time to a homegrown service.
  • Feature scope for an upload/media epic: it enumerates the capabilities users eventually ask for — persist original + derived files, track metadata (name, mime type, size, path), generate thumbnails/variants, and abstract where bytes actually live. That is a ready-made checklist for scoping an MVP versus a later phase, so we can ship "store and serve" first and defer "transform and manage" deliberately.
  • Roadmap risk on legacy surfaces: with a PHP 5.5 target, zero dependents, and an undetected license, this is only relevant to roadmap planning if a legacy Xi-based service already depends on it. In that case it drives a modernization line item (runtime upgrade, license audit, replacement of the file layer) rather than a new-feature line item.
  • Use cases it actually fits: internal tooling and back-office file handling on an existing Xi stack, migrations where the file layer must keep working while the rest of the app is rewritten, and prototypes where a reference implementation shortens design time.
  • Sourcing signal, not a shortlist entry: a low opportunity score plus 22 stars and no dependents means we should not treat this as a strategic dependency or plan a roadmap around its releases. Log it as "prior art reviewed" in the build-vs-buy write-up and move on.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only when all of the following hold:

  • An existing production system already runs on the Xi framework and depends on this library; replacing it is a separate project, and we need to understand its behavior before touching it.
  • The team is doing design research, not implementation — reading the storage abstraction and image pipeline to inform an internal spec.
  • A junior or prototype effort needs a working file layer on PHP 5.5–era infrastructure where no modern alternative can run.
  • Legal has independently cleared the NOASSERTION license status; until then, treat it as unlicensed and off-limits for shipped code.

Look elsewhere when:

  • New greenfield work. PHP 5.5 has been end-of-life for years; adopting it means shipping an unsupported runtime and inheriting known unpatched vulnerabilities. Modern stacks have mature, actively maintained file/media components, including framework-native upload and storage abstractions and dedicated image-processing libraries.
  • Security or compliance is in scope. Unmaintained code handling user-supplied file uploads is a poor risk trade — upload paths are a classic attack surface, and there will be no upstream fixes.
  • You need cloud storage, CDN delivery, virus scanning, or signed URLs. Expect to build those adapters yourself; there is no ecosystem to lean on at zero dependents.
  • You need a support contract or vendor accountability. There is none. A 22-star project with no dependents has no community to escalate to.
  • Licensing clarity is a blocker. NOASSERTION means the repository's terms were not machine-detectable; without a human review, distribution rights are unknown.
  • You are choosing a dependency for the next three years. Abandonment risk is effectively certain, so the total cost of ownership is dominated by eventual replacement, not by initial integration.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a small, unmaintained PHP file-handling library targeting a runtime that has been unsupported for years. We are not recommending adoption. It is valuable to us as a free design reference — it shows a clean split between "where files are stored" and "what we know about files," which de-risks the spec for our own upload and media work. The headline recommendation is to fund a small internal file/media capability on our current stack rather than inherit legacy code. Cost of reading it: a few hours. Cost of depending on it: an unsupported runtime, unclear licensing, and a guaranteed future migration.

For engineering: Treat xi/filelib as prior art. The transferable ideas are (1) keep the storage backend behind an interface so local disk, object storage, or a CDN can be swapped without touching domain code, and (2) model derived files (thumbnails, resized variants) as first-class records linked to an original, so regeneration and cleanup are tractable. Do not vendor it. Do not copy code — the license is NOASSERTION, so we cannot safely reuse source; reimplement the patterns from scratch. If any service already depends on it, that dependency is a modernization flag: scope the runtime upgrade and file-layer replacement together, and prioritize it ahead of new features on that service because unpatched upload handling is a live security exposure.

Bottom line: reference, not dependency. Reuse the architecture, discard the code.
