Collections Laravel Package

xi/collections

xi/collections extends Laravel Collections with handy, chainable macros and helpers for cleaner, more expressive array and data manipulation. Lightweight and easy to drop into any Laravel or PHP project.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Domain modeling: value objects vs. primitives. Xi Collections gives you first-class Enum and immutable collection types, which is exactly the toolkit for deciding whether a status column should be a string, an int constant, or a typed enumeration — and whether a lines relationship should be an array, a mutable Collection, or an immutable value object.
  • Aggregate boundary and invariant enforcement. Immutability means every "mutation" returns a new instance, so an aggregate can be handed to a view or a serializer without defensive copies or accidental aliasing bugs. This supports a build-vs-buy decision on whether to hand-roll immutability in your domain layer or adopt a library.
  • Roadmap / modernization sequencing. The package is a concrete artifact of the PHP 5.3 era — pre-native-enums, pre-typed-properties, pre-generics. If your roadmap includes a PHP 8.x upgrade, evaluating this package is really a decision about retiring legacy abstractions in favor of native enum (8.1+), readonly properties (8.1+), and array_is_list/first-class callable syntax.
  • API design precedent. Even if you never install it, the enumerated-type + typed-collection split is a useful reference for teams designing internal interfaces for state machines, permission sets, order lines, feature-flag sets, and event streams.
  • Use cases that map cleanly: finite state machines (order/payment lifecycle), permission and role sets, immutable config snapshots, deduplicated tag sets, and any collection passed across a boundary where mutation must be provably impossible.

My call: the category (immutable enumerations and collections) scores well on opportunity; this implementation does not. Treat it as a design reference, not a dependency.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only if:

  • You are actively maintaining a PHP 5.3/5.4/5.5 codebase (rare, and itself a roadmap red flag) where native enums and readonly properties do not exist.
  • You need immutable collection semantics and the alternative is writing your own from scratch — and you have already resolved the license question (composer metadata reports NOASSERTION, so legal must confirm terms before any install).
  • You are using the surrounding Xi framework and want consistency with its idioms.

Look elsewhere if any of the following is true — and for most teams at least three will be:

  • PHP version. Targeting PHP 5.3 (EOL August 2014) signals no compatibility work for PHP 7/8. Expect deprecation warnings or breakage on modern runtimes, and no coverage under typed properties or strict_types.
  • Native enums exist. On PHP 8.1+, a backed enum plus readonly classes covers the enumeration use case with zero dependencies and full static analysis support.
  • You need maintained collections. Prefer ramsey/collection, marcosh/php-collections, yiisoft/collections, Doctrine Collections (if already in the stack), or Laravel's Illuminate\Support\Collection for the mutable/fluent case.
  • Ecosystem signal matters. 26 stars and 0 dependents means no downstream validation, no security patch pipeline, and no community to catch regressions. This is effectively a solo/sunset project.
  • You need a support contract or SLA. There is none, and the bus factor is one.

If your answer is "we're on PHP 8 and we want immutable domain collections," the honest recommendation is: adopt the pattern, choose a maintained library or a 40-line internal base class, and move on.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives (one paragraph): This package solves a real modeling problem — making enumerations and collections type-safe and impossible to mutate accidentally — and the category is worth investing in. This particular library, however, is a legacy artifact: it targets PHP 5.3 (end-of-life since 2014), has no dependents, no visible maintenance, and an unresolved license. I recommend a time-boxed spike (1–2 days) to borrow its interface design, then standardize on PHP 8.1 native enums plus a maintained collection library. Cost of the spike is trivial; cost of adopting the dependency is unbounded upgrade and legal risk.

To engineering (the ask):

  • Do not add xi/collections to composer.json.
  • Do borrow the two-idea split: a typed enumeration base and an immutable collection contract for aggregate internals.
  • Implement a thin internal abstraction (or adopt ramsey/collection) behind an interface you own, so the choice is reversible.
  • Add static analysis (phpstan/psalm) rules that flag mutable arrays crossing domain boundaries — that is the real, durable version of what this package was reaching for in 2012.

Framing line for the roadmap review: "Low-cost, low-risk to study; high-risk to depend on. We take the pattern, not the package."
