Filament Push Notifications Laravel Package

xentixar/filament-push-notifications

Send and manage push notifications directly from your Filament admin panel. This package adds Firebase Cloud Messaging support, device token management, and a simple UI for composing and sending notifications in Laravel apps.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Shipping in-app engagement without building notification infrastructure. v2.0.0 adds browser web push via service workers, so a PM can scope "notify admins/users about X" as configuration rather than a multi-sprint build. This is the first release where the package addresses delivery outside the Filament panel, which meaningfully widens the use cases it supports.
  • Roadmap sequencing around admin-facing, not customer-facing, messaging. Because this is a Filament plugin, the realistic use cases are operational alerts to internal staff (new order, failed job, approval request, SLA breach) rather than marketing or lifecycle messaging to end users. Treat it as an internal-ops notification layer, not a replacement for a customer messaging platform.
  • Build-vs-buy for the notification delivery tier. Web push requires service worker registration, VAPID key management, subscription persistence, and permission-prompt UX — all low-differentiation plumbing. Adopting an existing package frees engineering capacity for the parts that are differentiating. The counterweight: this is a young package, so the "buy" decision carries a small dependency risk that a PM should price in explicitly rather than let engineering absorb silently.
  • Platform upgrade planning. The addition of Filament v5 support is a scheduling input — if the roadmap includes a Filament major upgrade, this package is now (nominally) not a blocker. Confirm whether v5 support means a clean upgrade path or a parallel branch; a major version bump that also changes framework compatibility is exactly where support matrices drift out of sync.
  • A 2.0.0 major bump is a forcing function for a dependency review. Even if the feature set is attractive, the semver-major signal means someone must own the upgrade, verify the service worker asset publishing, and re-test notification delivery end to end. Budget that work; don't treat it as a free composer update.

Assessment caveat for the PM: the release notes are the entire evidence base. They show two PRs, both from first-time contributors — one of whom is the package author's own handle and one of whom is an automated agent (Copilot). That is a thin quality and maturity signal. Verify before committing: existing adoption/downloads, open issue count, whether v1.0.1 → v2.0.0 contains breaking API or config changes not described in the notes, and whether the service worker implementation handles permission denial, subscription expiry, and VAPID key rotation. The changelog as written documents features, not migration steps — request the upgrade guide before scheduling.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • You run Filament and want notification delivery to internal staff without leaving the panel's conventions (resources, auth, user model).
  • Your requirement is browser/desktop push for a known, small, technically tolerant audience — admins and operators who will grant permission and tolerate occasional rough edges.
  • You are on, or actively planning to move to, Filament v5 and want the compatibility question resolved now.
  • The alternative is genuinely "build it ourselves," and your team would otherwise spend a sprint on service workers and subscription storage.

Look elsewhere when:

  • The audience is external customers. Permission-prompt UX, unsubscribe compliance, delivery analytics, and multi-channel orchestration are first-class requirements there, and they are not what this package is optimizing for.
  • You need email/SMS/in-app as peers to push, or a channel-abstraction layer. A Laravel notification-channel library or a managed push provider is the better fit at that point.
  • You are on Filament v3 or v4 and cannot upgrade. The 2.0.0 line is aimed at v5; assume you should stay pinned to v1.0.x and accept it is effectively unmaintained going forward.
  • Your org requires a documented security posture for new dependencies. Web push involves VAPID private keys and a service worker registered on your origin — a third-party script with that footprint needs review, and a package this young may not yet have a track record to point to.
  • Support and SLA matter. Single-maintainer, low-activity projects are fine for internal tooling and poor for anything on the critical path.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives — one paragraph: This is a free, open-source add-on for our admin panel that lets us send browser push notifications to staff — the kind that surface even when the panel isn't open. Version 2.0.0 is the first release that actually does this, and it also adds support for the next major version of the framework we build on. The upside is we can ship "alert the team instantly when X happens" without a development project. The honest caveat is that it is a young, single-maintainer package, so we should scope it to internal staff alerts first, keep it off the customer-facing critical path, and have engineering spend a short, bounded amount of time validating it before we commit it to the roadmap.

To engineering — the ask: Evaluate v2.0.0 against our Filament version and give a go/no-go inside one timeboxed spike. Specifically: (1) confirm whether the v5 support is a clean upgrade or a maintained parallel branch, and what breaks from v1.0.1; (2) audit the service worker — what it registers, what it can access, how VAPID keys are stored and rotated; (3) verify behavior when a user denies permission, when a subscription expires, and when the browser is offline; (4) assess the bus factor — one maintainer, two PRs, one of them agent-authored. Assume we may need to fork or vendor it; report how painful that would be.

Bottom line: Worth a bounded evaluation for internal staff notifications on Filament v5. Not a foundation to build a customer messaging strategy on.
