Eloquent Sync Laravel Package

xedi/eloquent-sync

xedi/eloquent-sync is a Laravel package for keeping Eloquent models synchronized with external systems. It helps map model data, push and pull changes, and keep local records consistent with remote sources, reducing custom integration boilerplate for sync workflows.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature enablement for bulk reassignment flows. The core value—sync() semantics for hasMany relationships—maps directly to user-facing features like "move all open tasks to a new owner," "reassign comments/projects between accounts," "bulk re-categorize line items," or "merge two customers." Today Laravel ships sync() only for belongsToMany; teams routinely hand-roll the hasMany equivalent, and this package is a reference implementation of that pattern.
  • Build vs. buy (or rather, build vs. borrow). With 1 star, 0 dependents, and no release since June 2020, this is effectively abandonware. The realistic PM decision is not "adopt" but "use as a design reference for an in-house implementation." The scope is small enough that the engineering cost of writing it internally (with tests and maintainability) is roughly equivalent to forking it.
  • Roadmap input for data-migration and admin tooling. Any roadmap item involving record ownership transfer, import/merge operations, or administrative bulk edits benefits from a consistent, tested reassignment primitive. Standardizing on one internal implementation prevents six divergent one-off scripts.
  • De-risking audit and integrity requirements. A centralized sync primitive is the natural seam where you enforce business rules — audit logging, guard clauses, soft-delete handling, transactional safety — rather than scattering update(['fk_id' => ...]) calls across the codebase.
  • Not a differentiator. This is infrastructure, not product surface. It should never appear on a roadmap as a feature; it belongs in the engineering platform backlog.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it (or its pattern) when:

  • You genuinely need hasMany reassignment semantics and Laravel's native belongsToMany::sync() doesn't apply because the relationship has no pivot table.
  • You're working in a Laravel/PHP codebase and can vendor or fork a small, MIT-licensed implementation into your own namespace with tests attached.
  • You need a quick reference implementation to validate the approach before committing engineering time to an internal version.
  • You have an existing legacy application pinned to an older Laravel version where this package's assumptions still hold.

Look elsewhere — or build internally — when:

  • Maintenance matters. No releases since mid-2020 means no support for modern Laravel (9/10/11), no PHP 8.2+ guarantees, and no security response. Treat this as unmaintained.
  • You need production reliability. 1 star and 0 dependents means essentially no real-world validation; assume you are the first serious user and will own every bug.
  • Your sync has business rules. If reassignment must respect soft deletes, trigger events, write audit trails, or run inside transactions with side effects, the generic package will not cover you — write it yourself so the rules live with your domain.
  • You need anything beyond the simplest case. No evidence of handling polymorphic relations, chunking for large datasets, or conflict resolution. Large-batch or concurrent scenarios should be handled by a purpose-built solution.
  • Compliance or security review is in scope. An unmaintained, low-visibility dependency will not clear most vendor-risk processes.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one line): A tiny open-source helper that solves a real but narrow data problem — moving child records between parents — but it's unmaintained and unproven, so we should borrow the idea, not the dependency.

Summary for engineering and leadership:

  • What it is: A small MIT-licensed Laravel package that adds sync()-style behavior to hasMany relationships, letting you efficiently re-assign a collection of child records to a new parent in one operation.
  • Why it matters: Several features on our roadmap (bulk reassignment, record merging, import/cleanup tooling) need exactly this primitive, and today each is likely to be implemented ad hoc — a known source of bugs and inconsistent audit behavior.
  • The honest risk: 1 GitHub star, zero known dependents, and no release since June 2020. It is not a dependency we can responsibly ship in production.
  • Recommendation: Do not add as a dependency. Spend a short, bounded engineering effort (estimated small — days, not weeks) to implement the same pattern internally, with tests, audit hooks, and support for our current Laravel/PHP versions. Use this package as a documented reference for the API shape only.
  • Decision needed from leadership: Approve a small platform-backlog item to build and standardize the internal reassignment primitive. This unblocks upcoming bulk-edit and data-migration work and prevents divergent one-off implementations.
  • Success measure: Eliminate duplicated ad hoc reassignment code across the codebase and ensure all reassignment operations emit consistent audit records.
