Type Hint Hydrator Laravel Package

xactsystems/type-hint-hydrator

TypeHintHydrator maps arrays and request data into typed PHP objects by reading constructor and property type hints, so you can skip hand-written mapping code. Supports nested objects, enums, and collections, and fits neatly into Laravel or any PHP project.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for the hydration layer. This package outsources the array→DTO mapping problem (typed properties, nested objects, date casting) that we would otherwise hand-roll and maintain. A patch release that keeps up with upstream majors is evidence the maintenance cost sits with the vendor, not us.
  • Framework upgrade sequencing. Support for Symfony 8.1 upwards and laminas-hydrator 4.0 upwards tells us the package is tracking upstream majors with a short lag. That unblocks a roadmap decision: we can schedule our Symfony/PHP upgrade without waiting on this dependency.
  • Release risk triage. v5.0.7 is a patch on the 5.0 line — no advertised features, no deprecations, no migration guide. PM call: accept as a routine dependency bump inside the next maintenance window rather than a planned work item.
  • API surface decisions around partial payloads. The fix for hydrating uninitialised dates directly affects endpoints that accept partial or absent date fields (PATCH-style updates, optional published_at/deleted_at inputs, imported records with missing dates). This release removes a class of runtime failures, which supports keeping those endpoints lenient rather than forcing clients to send every field.
  • Use cases it keeps viable: HTTP request → DTO hydration, queue/event payload mapping, importer and seeder pipelines, and any place where we accept loosely-typed JSON and want typed objects at the boundary.

When to Consider This Package

  • Adopt when: you are standardising on DTOs with typed properties, you hydrate from arrays (JSON bodies, queue payloads, fixtures), and you want one abstraction over Symfony Serializer and laminas-hydrator rather than coupling business code to either.
  • Adopt when: you are on, or actively planning, Symfony 8.1+ / laminas-hydrator 4+ — this release is explicitly aimed at that path.
  • Verify before adopting: "support for X upwards" wording in PHP packages frequently ships alongside a raised minimum or a dropped lower bound. Confirm the composer constraints in 5.0.7 before assuming it drops into an older Symfony 7.x or laminas-hydrator 3.x codebase — a lower-bound drop would be effectively breaking despite the patch number.
  • Look elsewhere when: Laravel's native validation plus explicit named-constructor mapping already covers your shapes; when you need schema generation / OpenAPI-first codegen rather than runtime hydration; or when you need long-term support guarantees on an older Symfony LTS that this release no longer targets.
  • Watch for: date handling semantics. A fix here implies previous versions silently mis-handled uninitialised date properties — if we already ship on 5.0.x, audit existing behaviour rather than assuming identical output.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a low-risk patch update to a dependency that converts incoming request and event data into typed application objects. It keeps us compatible with the current Symfony 8.1 and laminas-hydrator 4 releases and fixes a bug where records with missing dates could fail to load. There is no new functionality, no migration effort, and no change to commercial terms — it is a routine bump we can absorb in existing maintenance capacity.

To engineering: v5.0.7 adds forward compatibility with Symfony 8.1+ and laminas-hydrator 4.0+, and fixes hydration of uninitialised date properties. Treat it as a patch bump: update the constraint, run the suite against the current lockfile, and add a regression test covering DTOs with absent/optional date fields so the fix is pinned. Before merging, confirm whether the "upwards" support statements also raised the package's minimum supported versions — if so, sequence the bump with our own framework upgrade rather than ahead of it.
