Product Decisions This Supports
- Build vs. buy for phone/OTP verification. This package covers the undifferentiated-but-fiddly parts of SMS verification — OTP generation, storage, expiry, retry/throttle logic, and a driver seam for the SMS provider — so the team isn't hand-rolling nonce lifecycle and cooldown rules in application code.
- Feature: verified phone at signup / onboarding. Gate account creation, marketplace listings, or payout setup behind a verified number without building a bespoke service.
- Feature: step-up authentication. Re-verify via SMS before sensitive actions (changing payout details, large transfers, account recovery).
- Roadmap: framework upgrade path. v0.6.1 adds Laravel 13.x compatibility, which means the package is being tracked against the framework's release cadence. That removes a foreseeable "we can't upgrade Laravel because a dependency is stale" blocker from the next platform cycle.
- Use cases suited to it: consumer apps with international SMS needs, marketplaces needing trust signals, and products where verification is a gate rather than a growth loop.
- Use cases not suited: anything where verification UX, deliverability tuning, or fraud scoring is a differentiator rather than table stakes.
When to Consider This Package
Adopt when:
- You are on a supported Laravel version (through 13.x as of v0.6.1) and want verification to live in your own database rather than a vendor's.
- You want to own the SMS provider relationship (cost, routing, regional coverage) and swap providers without changing verification logic.
- Verification is a bounded concern — verify once, occasionally re-verify — and you don't need a full identity platform.
- You value a small dependency surface with active maintenance over a feature-rich but heavier integration.
Look elsewhere when:
- You need multi-channel orchestration (SMS + email + push + WhatsApp) with a unified template and fallback engine — a managed provider (Twilio Verify, Vonage, Stytch) is a better fit.
- Compliance and deliverability are load-bearing: 10DLC registration, TCPA consent capture, sender reputation, per-country routing rules, and delivery analytics are your problem to solve with this package, not the package's.
- You need fraud signals — SIM-swap detection, velocity scoring, number intelligence. This package will happily send OTPs to a VoIP number.
- You are not on Laravel, or you need a language-agnostic verification service shared across services.
- You require a stable public API contract with long-term support commitments. This is a 0.x package; minor releases may carry breaking changes.
How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)
For executives: This is a small, low-risk open-source dependency that gets phone verification into the product weeks earlier than building it in-house. It is actively maintained — the latest release (v0.6.1) adds Laravel 13 support and routine dependency hygiene, which means it will not pin us to an aging framework version. Cost is engineering time only; no per-verification platform fee beyond our own SMS provider.
For engineering: Thin Laravel-native wrapper — no invasive abstractions, no service container hijacking. We retain ownership of the verification table, throttling configuration, and the SMS driver, so provider swaps are a config change rather than a refactor. Upgrade risk for v0.6.1 is essentially nil: the release is Laravel 13.x compatibility plus a CI dependency bump, with no API changes, deprecations, or migrations. One caveat to plan around: the package is pre-1.0, so we should pin an exact version and review changelogs on upgrade rather than floating the constraint.
Decision requested: Approve adoption as the verification layer for [scope], with the understanding that compliance (10DLC/TCPA), deliverability tuning, and fraud detection remain our responsibility and may warrant a managed provider later. Revisit if verification becomes a growth or risk differentiator.
