Rest Api Laravel Package

wizards/rest-api

wizards/rest-api is a Laravel package for building RESTful APIs, offering a structured foundation for routes, controllers, and JSON responses so you can expose application data and resources with less boilerplate.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • API convention standardization. If the package supplies reusable controllers/response helpers (response envelopes, error formats, pagination, filtering), it can inform a decision to codify internal API conventions once instead of re-inventing them per service.
  • Make-vs-buy for API boilerplate. Gives a concrete baseline for the "build a thin internal API layer" option versus adopting a scaffold. For most teams this is a 1–2 week internal build, so the package mostly serves as a reference implementation.
  • Public/partner API roadmap gating. Relevant only if you are standing up a new HTTP surface and lack conventions; not a strategic platform decision.
  • Vendor and dependency risk assessment. The package's own metrics (3 stars, 0 dependents, last release January 2021) are themselves a decision input. They argue against use as a long-lived dependency and support a "borrow patterns, don't depend" outcome.
  • Prototype and discovery work. Acceptable in internal, throwaway, or hackday contexts to validate API shape and developer experience before committing to a design.
  • Decisions it does not support: customer-facing platform architecture, security- or compliance-sensitive surfaces, anything requiring SLAs, active patching, or ecosystem validation.

When to Consider This Package

Consider only if:

  • The surface is internal-only or low-traffic, with a small blast radius on failure.
  • The API footprint is small enough that the team can read, understand, and fork the entire package.
  • A short compatibility spike confirms it installs and runs on your current Laravel/PHP versions — no assumption of upstream fixes.
  • The license is permissive and the code is auditable in an afternoon.
  • You are willing to vendor (copy into the repo) and own maintenance, with a documented exit plan.
  • Speed matters more than longevity: proof of concept, spike, internal tooling.

Look elsewhere if:

  • The API is public or partner-facing, handles auth, payments, or PII, or carries uptime commitments.
  • The roadmap horizon exceeds 6–12 months, or the team lacks PHP capacity to maintain a fork.
  • You need security patching, framework version support, or community answers.
  • A first-party or well-maintained alternative covers the need: Laravel API Resources, Sanctum, built-in rate limiting, spatie/laravel-query-builder, Laravel Orion, league/fractal — or a thin internal convention layer you own.
  • Ecosystem validation (dependents, release cadence) is a procurement criterion.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a low-cost helper for building REST APIs, but its maintenance signal is poor — three stars, zero dependents, and no release since January 2021. We should not take a strategic dependency on it. The cost of adoption is small; the cost of ownership is unbounded. Recommendation: reject as a dependency, borrow the patterns. If we like its conventions, we can replicate them in an internal layer for roughly one to two engineer-weeks, keeping ownership and eliminating abandonment risk.

To engineering: Treat it as a source of ideas, not a library. Run a timeboxed spike to read the code and extract useful conventions — response envelopes, pagination, error handling — then implement them against current Laravel idioms. If we adopt any of it, vendor it behind an internal interface, cover it with our own tests, and keep a removal path. Assume no upstream fixes; verify PHP/Laravel compatibility before writing a line of product code.

Decision framing: Low adoption cost, high ownership cost, weak evidence of quality. Default to "reject as dependency, reference for patterns" unless the spike shows the package is genuinely trivial and the surface is internal-only.
