Etl Bundle Laravel Package

whitedigital-eu/etl-bundle

Symfony bundle for building ETL pipelines: extract data from sources, apply reusable transformers, and load it into destinations. Integrates with Symfony services and console workflows for repeatable imports, syncs, and data processing jobs.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for data movement. This package provides a reusable Extract → Transform → Load abstraction instead of bespoke import/export scripts. The decision it informs: do we hand-roll pipeline code per integration, or standardize our ingestion path on a shared ETL library?
  • Feature enablement. Typical candidates: CSV/API imports, scheduled partner-data syncs, bulk record creation from uploads, report/data exports, and one-off data migrations between systems. If a roadmap item is "let customers import their data," this is a candidate implementation.
  • Roadmap scoping and risk. At 0.5.x this is pre-1.0 software. That pushes toward using it for internal/back-office pipelines and admin tooling, not customer-facing, revenue-critical sync infrastructure — unless we're prepared to fork.
  • The 0.5.10 change specifically. "Allow inserting array" fixes a bug where a loader could not write an array of rows in one call. For a PM this matters because it's the difference between a working batch-insert path and a per-record loop — i.e., it affects throughput expectations and whether bulk-upload features are viable on this library today. It's a patch, not a capability change; no new product surface.
  • Dependency posture. We would own the abstraction layer, not the package. Deciding to adopt means accepting a small, single-maintainer dependency and pinning versions explicitly.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • The stack is PHP (Laravel or Symfony — note this ships as a Symfony bundle, so Laravel adoption requires wiring the services manually rather than a drop-in provider).
  • The workload is batch/bounded, not streaming: nightly syncs, scheduled pulls, file imports, exports.
  • Volumes are modest enough that per-row overhead and PHP-level orchestration are acceptable.
  • The team is comfortable reading and patching third-party source; a pre-1.0 package will have gaps.
  • You want a small, focused pipeline abstraction rather than a full connector platform.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need exactly-once semantics, backpressure, or high-throughput streaming (use a queue-native or dedicated data tool).
  • You need managed connectors, schema evolution, or observability out of the box.
  • You require a 1.0 stability contract, published security-patch SLAs, or vendor support.
  • The team is not PHP-centric, or the data platform is already elsewhere (warehouse-native tooling, dbt, Airbyte, etc.).
  • The pipeline is customer-facing and failure-visible — the blast radius of an unmaintained dependency is too high.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: We can accelerate several data-in/out features by standardizing on a small open-source ETL library instead of writing custom scripts per integration. It is a low-cost, low-lock-in dependency we isolate behind our own interface, so it is replaceable. Caveat: it is early-stage (0.5.x), so we scope it to internal and admin workflows first and revisit once it reaches a stable release.

To engineering: Thin Extract/Transform/Load abstraction, easy to wrap and swap. Version 0.5.10 fixes array/batch inserts, so bulk loader paths now work as expected — pin to 0.5.10 or later. It's a Symfony bundle, so Laravel integration means manual container wiring; budget a short spike. Because it's pre-1.0, we should own a thin adapter layer and a fork path, and avoid depending on its internal APIs directly.

Ask: a one-sprint spike to validate one real pipeline end-to-end, with a go/no-go on adopting it as our default ingestion approach.
