Novasettingstool Laravel Package

weslal/novasettingstool

A Laravel Nova settings tool for managing application configuration from a dedicated Nova interface. Store, edit, and retrieve key-value settings without touching config files, keeping environment-specific options centralized and easy to update.

Getting Started

  1. Install or upgrade to the patched release:
    composer require vendor/package:^1.0.3

  2. Confirm where the package’s middleware is registered. In Laravel 11+ this is typically bootstrap/app.php:
    ->withMiddleware(function (Middleware $middleware) {
        $middleware->append(\Vendor\Package\Middleware\PackageMiddleware::class);
    })

    On older Laravel versions, check app/Http/Kernel.php for global middleware or route middleware aliases.
  3. Look first at:
    • The package README and changelog
    • The published config file, if any
    • The middleware class itself
    • Existing package tests covering middleware behavior
  4. First use case: attach the middleware to a route group or global stack where its behavior is required, then write a feature test asserting the request/response outcome. Because v1.0.3 is a middleware bug fix, start by reproducing the previously broken scenario and confirming it now passes.

Implementation Patterns

  • Register middleware deliberately. Prefer route middleware or aliases over global middleware unless every request needs the behavior.
  • Use route groups for scoped behavior:
    Route::middleware('package-alias')->group(function () {
        Route::get('/example', ExampleController::class);
    });

  • Drive behavior through config and environment variables where the package supports it. Publish config only when defaults need overriding.
  • Test middleware through feature tests rather than unit tests alone:
    $this->get('/example')
        ->assertOk()
        ->assertHeader('X-Package-Header', 'expected');

  • Use withoutMiddleware() only for tests that intentionally bypass the package, and document why.
  • In CI, run the full middleware-related test suite after upgrading to v1.0.3. Patch releases that touch middleware can change request flow even without API changes.
  • If the middleware has a terminate() method, verify post-response behavior separately, since it runs after the response is sent.
  • Cache configuration and routes only after confirming the middleware registration is correct:
    php artisan config:clear
    php artisan route:clear

Gotchas and Tips

  • Middleware order matters. Global middleware runs on every request; route middleware only runs on matched routes. Confirm the package middleware’s position relative to authentication, session, and CORS middleware.
  • After upgrading to v1.0.3, clear cached config and routes. Stale caches can make a middleware fix appear not to work.
  • The release note only states “Fixed a bug in the Middleware.” Treat it as a patch release, but verify behavior with a regression test because the exact bug and affected code path are not documented.
  • Inspect the package diff or changelog if available. Vague release notes make it worth checking whether the fix changes request short-circuiting, headers, exception handling, or middleware priority.
  • Debug middleware execution with:
    php artisan route:list -v

    and application logging or Laravel Telescope if available.
  • If middleware priority causes conflicts, use Laravel’s middleware priority configuration rather than relying on registration order alone.
  • Pin the package version in composer.json and review the lock file diff when deploying the patch.
  • Extension points to check: custom middleware extending the package middleware, container bindings used by the middleware, published config values, and any events dispatched during request handling.
