Nova Settings Tool Laravel Package

weslal/nova-settings-tool

A Laravel Nova tool that adds a settings management page to your admin panel, letting you view and edit application configuration values from Nova instead of editing files. Useful for managing editable site options and environment-specific settings in one place.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for admin-configurable settings. The core value proposition is deleting a class of "please change this value" engineering tickets: any non-secret, global, low-cardinality setting (support email, maintenance banner copy, default pagination size, feature toggles, currency/tax defaults, branding fields) moves from a code deploy to an admin form. The buy-side cost is near zero (MIT, Composer install), so the real decision is build vs. adopt vs. fork rather than build vs. buy.
  • Roadmap sequencing for internal tooling. Because this is a Nova tool, it only pays off if Nova is already in the stack and your team is already paying for it. It makes sense as an additive item tacked onto an existing admin-panel investment, not as a standalone roadmap initiative.
  • Feature-flag / kill-switch scoping. Database-backed key/value storage is a legitimate lower tier of a rollout strategy: global on/off toggles for a new checkout flow or a partially-shipped feature, without standing up LaunchDarkly or writing a bespoke flags table. Roadmap implication: it defers the buy decision on a real feature-flag vendor by one or two quarters, but it is explicitly not a substitute for per-user targeting, percentage rollouts, or experiment analysis.
  • Deployment autonomy and ops ownership. The package shifts operational config ownership from engineering to support/ops staff — reducing lead time on cosmetic and policy changes from "next release" to "now." This is measurable: track settings-change tickets per month before and after adoption to validate the investment.
  • Multi-environment config hygiene. It formalizes a boundary: .env / config files for environment-specific and secret values; database settings for business-facing, human-editable values. That boundary is a decision worth making explicitly regardless of whether you adopt this specific package.
  • A forcing function on audit and governance. Adopting it without audit logging, approval workflow, or validation means a non-engineer can silently change a value that breaks customer-facing behavior. That trade-off needs an explicit product decision (accept, or budget for a fork).

When to Consider This Package

Adopt only when all of the following hold:

  • You are already running Laravel Nova on a version this package is compatible with. Given the last release is 2018-12-24 (Nova 1.x/Laravel 5.7 era), on Nova 4/5 or Laravel 9+ you should assume it does not work without a fork.
  • The settings are global, non-secret, low-cardinality, and human-readable — not per-tenant, not per-user, not credentials.
  • You need fewer than roughly a dozen setting groups; beyond that the flat key/value model and its lack of validation, typing, and schema migration story become a liability.
  • The team has, or is willing to spend, a day or two of engineering time to vendor/fork the ~small codebase and take ownership of it.
  • Your risk tolerance for an effectively unmaintained dependency (8 stars, single maintainer, no release in over six years) is acceptable — treated as source you copy in, not a package you depend on.

Look elsewhere when:

  • No Nova, or a modern Nova version. The integration cost exceeds the build cost. A plain Nova Resource or a Laravel Filament page over a settings table gets you the same outcome in comparable time with a maintained dependency.
  • You need typed settings, validation, encryption, or caching with invalidation — spatie/laravel-settings covers this class of problem with active maintenance; adopting it is the lower-risk path.
  • You need per-tenant or per-team settings at scale, audit trails, approval workflows, or scheduled/versioned config.
  • You intend to store secrets, API keys, or anything that must not appear in a database dump.
  • You are planning a Nova upgrade in the near term — this becomes a blocker to clean up rather than a feature.
  • Your platform is not Laravel/PHP, obviously.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, free, MIT-licensed add-on to our existing Nova admin panel that lets support and ops change customer-facing text and on/off switches themselves instead of filing engineering tickets. Cost is marginal — a Composer dependency plus roughly a day of setup and review. The catch is that it has been unmaintained since 2018, so I'm not recommending we depend on it; I'm recommending we either (a) copy the pattern into a small internal Nova resource we own, or (b) timebox a one-week spike to confirm it runs on our Nova version before committing. Either way the payoff is removing a recurring class of low-value engineering work and shortening the change cycle for routine config from a release to minutes.

To engineering: This is a thin Nova tool over a database key/value settings table with a runtime accessor. It is a pattern, not a platform — no typing, no validation, no caching strategy, no audit log, and no release since December 2018. My ask is not "add this dependency." It is: review whether the pattern is right for our non-secret, global settings, and if so, implement it as a small first-party Nova resource (or vendor this code into our repo) so we own the migration, validation, and cache invalidation. Hard constraint we should agree on up front: secrets stay in .env/secret manager, and every setting that can affect customer-facing behavior gets validation plus an audit trail. Success criterion for the spike: a setting can be changed by a non-engineer, takes effect without a deploy, and is fully reversed by rolling back one row.
