Token Generator Laravel Package

wernerdweight/token-generator

wernerdweight/token-generator is a Laravel/PHP package for generating unique, secure tokens for API keys, authentication, and identifiers. It offers configurable length and character sets with collision-safe generation for dependable results.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for a commodity primitive. Token generation is a ~50-line problem. This package forces the question explicitly, and the honest answer for most teams is "build" (or use what the framework already ships). The decision it enables is spending zero engineering time on a dependency evaluation and instead writing a small internal helper.
  • Feature scoping for token-shaped surfaces. Concretely informs how we ship: email verification links, password reset tokens, invite/referral codes, API keys, idempotency keys, webhook signing secrets, short share links, MFA backup codes. Each has different requirements (length, alphabet, ambiguity-free encoding, expiry), which is exactly where a generic generator either fits or doesn't.
  • Roadmap sequencing for security-adjacent work. If token generation appears in a compliance or security review, this is a prompt to standardise on one approved source of randomness across services rather than letting three teams hand-roll three approaches.
  • Risk register entry. With 1 star, 0 dependents, and a last release of Feb 2023, adopting it creates an unowned dependency. That's a decision input, not just a footnote.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only if all of the following hold:

  • You are prototyping or building an internal tool where token quality is not a security boundary.
  • You have inspected the source and confirmed it uses a CSPRNG (random_bytes / random_int) rather than rand/mt_rand/uniqid.
  • It exposes a format you'd otherwise have to write (e.g. human-readable, ambiguity-free alphabets) and that format matters to your product.
  • You are comfortable vendoring or forking it, because upstream maintenance is not a realistic assumption.

Look elsewhere — or build in-house — when:

  • Any token is a credential. Password resets, API keys, session secrets, and invite codes that gate access need a reviewed source. Laravel already gives you Str::random(), Str::ulid(), Str::uuid(), random_bytes(), and signed URLs; these cover virtually every case with zero dependency risk.
  • You need guarantees, not features. No audit trail, no published security policy, no release cadence since early 2023, and no dependents means no community pressure to fix a defect.
  • Framework compatibility is a concern. Verify PHP and Laravel version support against your current runtime before assuming it installs cleanly; a 2023 release may not track your upgrade path.
  • You want typed, expiring, single-use tokens. That's a domain model concern (storage, revocation, TTL), not a string-generation concern. A generator won't help, and reaching for one often hides the real work.

Net PM position: this is a reference implementation, not a dependency. Read it, borrow the alphabet/format ideas, and ship the 30 lines yourself.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: A developer flagged a small open-source library for generating random tokens. It's a trivial utility, and the framework we already pay for includes equivalent functionality. My recommendation is to not add it as a dependency: it has effectively no user base, hasn't been updated since early 2023, and offers no capability we don't already have. Adopting it would add supply-chain and maintenance risk in exchange for saving perhaps an hour of engineering time. We'll implement token generation internally against Laravel's built-in secure random helpers, which keeps ownership in-house and removes an unmaintained third party from our security surface.

For engineering: Treat wernerdweight/token-generator as a design reference, not a package. Confirm the CSPRNG usage if you read it, lift anything useful about alphabet design, then implement against Str::random() / random_bytes() with an explicit length and character-set policy documented in one place. If we later need ULIDs or signed URLs, Laravel covers those natively — no new dependency required. Only revisit this if a concrete product requirement emerges that the framework genuinely can't meet.
