Coasterframework Laravel Package

web-feet/coasterframework

Coaster Framework is the core Laravel package behind Coaster CMS, providing modular content management, admin tools, and extensible building blocks for content-driven websites. It helps developers launch custom sites quickly while following Laravel conventions.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for content-managed sites. Coaster is a working, Laravel-native CMS baseline (pages, block-based content editing, themes, roles/permissions). The decision it informs is whether to spend engineering weeks assembling a custom admin (Filament/Nova + custom models) or start from an existing editor-facing CMS.
  • Fork-and-own vs. dependency. Because this is the application repository for the CMS — not a composer require-able package — adoption realistically means forking the app and owning its lifecycle. That reframes the decision from "add a library" to "take on a codebase."
  • Roadmap sequencing for content-heavy surfaces. Marketing site, docs portal, blog, landing-page program: a CMS like this compresses the path to "marketer can publish without a deploy," which is often a Q1/Q2 roadmap item that otherwise competes with product work.
  • Feature scoping for an internal CMS build. Even if we don't adopt it, the block/field/theme model is a useful reference spec for what our own editor needs — a cheap way to sanity-check scope before committing to a build.
  • Agency/studio delivery economics. For Laravel shops shipping client brochure and content sites, this is a candidate standard base that reduces per-project setup cost — a portfolio-level decision, not a single-product one.
  • Explicitly not a fit for: embedding CMS capability inside a commercial SaaS we distribute, or any surface requiring active vendor patching. Those decisions should route to maintained alternatives with clear licensing.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • The team is already Laravel-native — no new runtime, language, or hosting model to learn.
  • You need editor-friendly, structured page building (blocks/fields) rather than free-form WYSIWYG HTML, and want a working reference implementation to fork.
  • You are comfortable owning the code: budget for dependency upgrades, security review, and internal documentation from day one.
  • Distribution is internal or client-delivered under terms compatible with GPL-3.0 copyleft, and you've had that reviewed.
  • Speed to a demo matters more than long-term vendor guarantees — e.g., a spike, a prototype, or a low-risk content site.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Maintenance currency is a hard requirement. The last release is dated 2020-11-10; assume the Laravel version is several majors behind and budget a real upgrade effort before you can run it on a supported framework. Verify this in a spike rather than trusting the README.
  • You need a composer-installable package dropped into an existing application. This is a full app; integrating it means adopting its structure. Packages like Statamic, October CMS, or a Filament-based admin are the better shape for that need.
  • License friction exists. GPL-3.0 is copyleft; if the plan is closed-source redistribution or a distributed SaaS where the CMS is a meaningful part of the offering, get legal input before prototyping. Don't let a spike quietly become a commitment.
  • You need a vendor relationship: SLAs, security advisories, a hiring pool, a large plugin ecosystem. At ~30 stars the community is a rounding error; support is whatever your team builds.
  • Requirements lean headless/API-first, multisite, or e-commerce — validate against the actual code, don't assume.

Diligence checklist before any commitment: dependency audit (composer outdated, known CVEs), test coverage, upgrade path to a currently supported Laravel, issue-response history, and a licensing opinion in writing.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives — the 60-second version: Coaster is a full-featured, Laravel-based CMS we can use as a starting point for content-managed sites. It would let marketers publish without engineering involvement, which shortens delivery on a recurring roadmap item and could lower per-project cost for our Laravel work. Two caveats carry real weight: the project's last release was in 2020, so we would be taking ownership of maintenance and security, and it's GPL-3.0 licensed, which constrains how we can distribute products built on it. Recommendation: fund a short, time-boxed spike to confirm it runs on a supported Laravel version and to get a licensing read — then decide adopt-fork versus integrate-a-maintained-alternative. The license cost is zero; the real cost is the engineering ownership.

For engineering — the framing that matters:

  • It's Laravel all the way down: familiar patterns, no exotic runtime, easy for the team to read on day one.
  • It's an application, not a package. Plan for a fork, a pinned dependency set, and a real upgrade project before production.
  • Expect to own security patching, dependency modernization, and internal docs. There is no meaningful upstream community to lean on.
  • The block/field/theme content model is the genuinely valuable asset — worth studying even if we build our own editor.

The ask: one to two sprints for a spike — get it running on a current Laravel, audit dependencies, assess license fit, and produce a recommendation with an honest total-cost-of-ownership estimate.
