Lumen Slackin Laravel Package

vluzrmos/lumen-slackin

Lumen Slackin is a Lumen package that adds Slack team invitation support to your app, providing routes and configuration for Slackin-style signup so users can request invites to your Slack workspace.

Getting Started

  • Confirm the package is a Lumen application, not a conventional library. The fastest path is usually to clone the repo, copy .env.example to .env, run composer install, and serve it directly. Installing it into an existing Laravel/Lumen app requires manual service-provider and config wiring.
  • Look first at: the README, composer.json (Lumen/PHP constraints), the package config file, .env.example, and the src/ directory for the invite service/controller and any Artisan command.
  • Set the minimum config: SLACK_TOKEN (legacy xoxp- token with admin/invite permissions), SLACK_TEAM (team subdomain only, e.g. myteam), and optionally a default invite channel.
  • Register the provider if embedding in Lumen: add $app->register(Vluzrmos\Slackin\...ServiceProvider::class); in bootstrap/app.php, and copy the package config into config/ manually if vendor:publish is unavailable.
  • First use case: submit an email address to the invite endpoint (or call the provided command/service) and receive a Slack invitation. Test with your own email against a real Slack team before building a form around it.

Implementation Patterns

  • Landing-page invite form: add a route in your app that accepts email, validates it, resolves the package invite service, and returns JSON or redirects. Map Slack responses (ok, already_invited, invalid_email) to user-friendly messages.
  • Programmatic invite: inject or resolve the invite service and call something like invite($email, $channel). Prefer this over calling the HTTP endpoint internally; it keeps CSRF, middleware, and JSON formatting out of the loop.
  • Queue/async invites: dispatch a job after signup that performs the invite, so Slack latency and rate limits do not block your request cycle. Log the Slack error payload for retries.
  • CLI/admin workflow: use or wrap the package command for bulk or manual invites (e.g. php artisan slack:invite [email protected]). This is useful for support staff and one-off onboarding.
  • Multi-team or multi-channel: treat token/team/channel as per-call configuration rather than global config. Instantiate the client/service with overridden values or temporarily swap config before invoking.
  • Integration into an existing app: if route registration conflicts, copy the controller/service into your app namespace and bind it yourself. The package is small enough that selective vendoring is often cleaner than fighting Lumen bootstrapping.
  • Wrapper endpoint: expose a single /api/slack-invite route in your app and keep the package behind it. This isolates future replacement (e.g. moving to a maintained Slack SDK) to one file.

Gotchas and Tips

  • Legacy Slack tokens are effectively dead. The package targets the 2016 users.admin.invite flow and legacy xoxp- tokens. Modern Slack apps require OAuth with users:write/admin scopes, and invite APIs are restricted. Expect not_authed, invalid_auth, missing_scope, or restricted_action errors.
  • PHP/Lumen version lock-in. The 2016 constraints will not install cleanly on PHP 8. Prefer a pinned PHP 7.0/7.1 container for the standalone app; avoid --ignore-platform-reqs in a production monolith unless you have tested it.
  • Unmaintained code. Audit routes, validation, CSRF/CORS, and any public-facing form before exposing it. Assume no security patches.
  • Config typos are the most common failure. SLACK_TEAM must be the subdomain only (no https:// or .slack.com); the token must be the full legacy token. A wrong team produces confusing team_not_found-style responses.
  • Silent failures. Errors from Slack are often passed through or swallowed. Debug by calling the Slack API directly with curl using the same token and payload; this quickly separates token/scope problems from package bugs.
  • Rate limits. Slack invite endpoints are strictly throttled. Add throttling to your form, queue invites, and handle 429/rate_limited responses with backoff.
  • Lumen defaults. Facades, Eloquent, and some middleware are disabled by default in Lumen. If the package expects them, enable $app->withFacades() / $app->withEloquent() or wire dependencies explicitly.
  • Extension point: the invite service/client binding is the natural seam. Fork or override it to swap in a maintained Slack SDK while keeping the package's routes and config surface.
  • Container/CI: run the standalone Lumen app in its own container rather than embedding it in a modern Laravel app; this avoids dependency conflicts and makes the legacy PHP pin explicit.
