Language Detector Laravel Package

vluzrmos/language-detector

Laravel package for detecting the language of text strings through a simple API. It includes a service provider, facade, and configuration, making it easy to identify languages for localization, validation, or routing decisions with minimal setup.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • International expansion sequencing. Locale detection is the enabling layer for shipping localized experiences; it turns "which market do we enter next?" into a concrete routing and content architecture decision rather than an abstract strategy question.
  • URL and information architecture. Because the package supports browser-preference detection alongside subdomain and route-prefix strategies, it forces an explicit early decision on how localized URLs are structured — a choice that affects SEO, analytics segmentation, and CDN caching. This is a one-way door worth deciding deliberately.
  • First-visit locale negotiation (build vs. buy). The core capability — inferring a user's language from Accept-Language and routing them to the right localized content — is well-understood, low-differentiation work. Adopting a package here is a classic "buy the commodity, build the differentiator" call that frees engineering capacity for actual product surface area.
  • Onboarding and activation for non-English users. Automatic locale selection removes a friction point (manual language switching) at the moment of first contact, which is where activation losses are highest for international cohorts.
  • SEO and discoverability strategy. Correct locale routing underpins hreflang, canonical URLs, and geo-targeted landing pages; the detection strategy chosen here directly constrains how those are implemented.
  • Localization roadmap scoping. A working detection layer lets you launch a market with a single locale and add more without re-architecting, supporting an incremental (per-market) rollout rather than a big-bang multilingual release.
  • Experimentation and segmentation. Resolved locale becomes a usable segmentation dimension for A/B tests, pricing experiments, and content personalization — useful for product analytics even before full translation coverage exists.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • You run a Laravel application (or a Laravel-adjacent PHP service) and are adding a second or third language.
  • You need first-visit language inference from browser preferences, and you want it to fall back gracefully to a default locale.
  • You are choosing between subdomain-per-locale (fr.example.com), route-prefix (/fr/), or a hybrid, and want one library to support several strategies so the decision stays reversible.
  • Your team is small and the alternative is hand-rolling middleware, locale negotiation, and edge-case handling for malformed or multi-valued Accept-Language headers.
  • You want the behavior to live in application middleware, close to routing, rather than in a CDN or edge layer.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Your need is translation management, not detection — TMS platforms (Crowdin, Lokalise, Phrase) own string workflows, translator collaboration, and release gating. This package does not attempt that.
  • You require geo-IP-based routing (country → language) as the primary signal; that needs a GeoIP provider or edge configuration, with this package at most as a secondary preference layer.
  • You are not on Laravel, or you are running a heavily customized/headless routing stack where the framework's middleware conventions don't apply.
  • You only ever ship a single language (detection adds a dependency and a failure mode for zero user value).
  • You need server-side rendering plus edge caching with strict per-locale cache keys — verify the caching interaction before committing; locale negotiation in middleware is a common source of cache-poisoning bugs.
  • Maintenance risk is unacceptable. This is a small, single-maintainer package (~109 stars, zero dependents in the ecosystem). That is not disqualifying, but it means: no vendor SLA, no security response process, and a real bus-factor. If locale detection is on a critical path, plan to wrap it behind your own interface and be prepared to fork or replace it.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives. This is a small, low-cost dependency that unlocks a disproportionately valuable capability: letting international users land on content in their own language without a manual step. It de-risks and accelerates market entry, improves conversion for non-English cohorts, and lays the foundation for SEO investment in localized pages. Cost is measured in days, not quarters, and the exit cost is low if we change direction — provided we isolate it behind an internal interface. The real decision it forces is strategic, not technical: which URL structure do we commit to for localized content? I'd recommend approving a timeboxed evaluation rather than a broad rollout.

For engineering. It's a thin Laravel middleware layer over locale resolution with three pluggable strategies — browser Accept-Language, subdomain, and route prefix — plus a default-locale fallback. The integration surface is small and idiomatic, so the work is mostly in (a) picking a URL strategy, (b) deciding precedence between signals, and (c) confirming behavior with your caching layer. Two engineering asks before adoption: wrap it in our own LocaleResolver contract so a fork or swap is a one-file change, and write contract tests around malformed/absent headers and unsupported-locale fallback. Note the maintenance profile — small maintainer base, no dependents — so treat it as vendored-but-replaceable code, not as infrastructure we depend on unexamined.
