Cats Module Laravel Package

visiosoft/cats-module

Visiosoft Cats Module is a Laravel/PyroCMS addon that adds category management to Streams-based applications, letting you create, organize, and relate content through reusable categories and hierarchical structures.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • visiosoft/cats-module is not a general-purpose Laravel package. It is an addon for OpenClassify (VisioSoft's Laravel-based classifieds platform), which itself sits on the Streams Platform (the former PyroCMS modular CMF). It follows the addon convention: a service provider, Streams-registered migrations, namespaced views/translations, config, and route bindings.
  • Fit is therefore binary: viable only if the target application is OpenClassify or another Streams Platform install that expects the visiosoft/* addon namespace and default_-prefixed table conventions. In a vanilla Laravel app it is not a drop-in taxonomy/category package — there is no clean seam to consume it without importing the Streams runtime.
  • If the requirement is simply "hierarchical categories," native Laravel options (kalnoy/nestedset, staudenmeir/laravel-adjacency-list, or a hand-rolled closure table) deliver the same capability with a fraction of the coupling.

Integration feasibility

  • Mechanically straightforward in the intended host: composer require visiosoft/cats-module, register the provider, run migrations, seed default category trees, attach permissions and admin views. Expect the module to assume sibling modules (files, fields, settings, users) are present.
  • The real cost is not install; it is dependency reconciliation. The module is versioned against a specific Streams/OpenClassify generation, so the host application's Laravel/PHP constraint and the module's must be co-satisfiable. That must be verified from composer.json before any estimate is credible — this is the single highest-value pre-work item.

Technical risk

  • Adoption signal is effectively zero: 0 stars, 0 dependents, no downstream consumers to reveal integration edge cases or regressions. The 0.06 score and the 18.54 opportunity score together read as "niche-relevant but unproven," not "small but solid."
  • Abandonment risk is material: last release 2023-11-13, no activity signal since. A Laravel package that old is likely pinned below current Laravel majors, and Streams Platform itself has a slow upgrade cadence.
  • Bus factor of one-ish: vendor-owned, closed roadmap. No public issue triage, no security disclosure process, no test matrix visible.
  • Hidden coupling: Streams addons frequently assume table prefixes, route names, cache keys, and permission slugs shared with the host; collisions surface at runtime, not at install.
  • Supply chain: a low-visibility vendor package with no dependents is a poor candidate for blind composer update in CI.

Key questions (must answer before commitment)

  1. What are the exact php, laravel/framework, and streams-platform constraints in composer.json, and does our target PHP/Laravel version satisfy them?
  2. Does the module ship migrations that mutate or depend on core Streams tables? Are they additive only?
  3. Is the category tree the system of record, or a projection of another module's data?
  4. What is the upgrade story when OpenClassify bumps a major — is the module maintained in lockstep?
  5. Is there an HTTP/API surface (routes, controllers, resources) we would be exposing, and does it respect our auth/permission model?
  6. What test coverage exists, and can we run it against our stack?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Green light only for: OpenClassify-based classifieds/marketplace deployments, or an existing Streams Platform app that already ships visiosoft/* addons.
  • Red light for: vanilla Laravel/Symfony apps, API-only services, or any product where categories are a first-class domain concept requiring bespoke schema, audit, or search behaviour.

Migration path

  1. Spike (1–2 days). Install into a throwaway OpenClassify instance at our target version; exercise category CRUD, nesting depth, permissions, and translation. Capture the actual schema diffs.
  2. Vendor, don't depend. Fork into a private VCS repo, tag an internal version, and pin by commit hash. Treat it as first-party code we own, not a third-party dependency.
  3. Wrap it. Put an application-level CategoryRepository interface in front of the module so domain code never imports Visiosoft\CatsModule\*. This keeps a future replacement a swap rather than a rewrite.
  4. Contract tests. Write characterization tests against the wrapper (create/move/delete subtree, permission enforcement, slug uniqueness, depth limits) so a core upgrade fails loudly.
  5. If greenfield, don't adopt. Model categories natively and only borrow the module's data model as a reference.

Compatibility

  • Assume MySQL-only assumptions (JSON columns, default_ prefix, possibly fulltext). Validate on our actual DB and charset before estimating.
  • Verify Laravel major support explicitly; if it tops out below our target, the fork must carry the upgrade work — budget for it.

Sequencing

  • Week 1: spike + composer constraint audit + go/no-go gate.
  • Week 2–3: fork, CI, wrapper interface, characterization tests.
  • Week 3–4: admin UI/permission integration, seed data, search/filter wiring.
  • Cutover after the wrapper contract tests are green and the fallback (native model) is scoped.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Ownership must be explicit: one named engineer owns the fork, its upgrade cadence, and its CVE posture. Un-owned vendored forks rot silently.
  • Budget a recurring quarterly review against OpenClassify/Streams releases; a stale upstream means we absorb upstream fixes ourselves.
  • Pin in composer.json and forbid automated dependency bumps touching this package; require human review.

Support

  • No vendor SLA, no paid support path evident, no active issue tracker signal. Internal escalation is the only escalation.
  • Document the module's surface area in our runbook so on-call isn't reverse-engineering Streams at 3am.

Scaling

  • Watch recursive category queries: with Streams' ORM overhead, deep trees and per-request tree hydration are the likely scaling wall. Cache the rendered tree aggressively and invalidate on write.
  • Category counts are small (thousands, not millions), so the module itself is unlikely to be the bottleneck — but its query patterns will be if it lazy-loads relationships per node. Profile before launch.

Failure modes

  • Silent breakage on a Laravel/Streams upgrade (no test suite to catch it) — mitigated by characterization tests.
  • Migration collisions or prefix assumptions corrupting core tables on a shared DB.
  • Permission/route name collisions with sibling addons, producing 403s or route shadowing.
  • Orphaned category subtrees after partial deletes if FK cascades aren't enforced.
  • Vendor disappearance: repo archived or deleted, leaving no upstream. Forking is the mitigation.

Ramp-up

  • Streams Platform has a real learning curve (addon registration, Streams fields, namespaced migrations, view namespaces). Estimate 2–4 weeks for a mid-level Laravel developer to become productive in the module and confident making changes.
  • Onboarding cost is concentrated and one-time; the ongoing cost is the quarterly upgrade review plus any fork maintenance.

Verdict

  • Low adoption, low activity, zero ecosystem, high host-framework coupling. Adopt only inside an OpenClassify deployment, only as a pinned fork, and only behind an application-owned interface. For any other context — including a greenfield Laravel build — decline and implement categories natively.
