Nova Back Navigation Laravel Package

visanduma/nova-back-navigation

A Laravel Nova package that adds back-button navigation to Nova screens, letting users quickly return to the previous page or index without losing their place. Simple to install and lightweight, it improves everyday admin workflows by making resource pages easier to move through.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Admin UX polish vs. engineering time. Nova's SPA-style navigation makes browser "back" behave unpredictably across resource index → detail → related-resource drill-downs. This package is a tiny, targeted fix for that friction. The PM decision it informs is whether that friction is worth any engineering spend at all — for a 5-person internal ops team, it probably is; for a 200-seat support org with high ticket volume, one back button is not the fix.
  • Build vs. buy (and buy vs. copy). At zero stars, zero dependents, and an opportunity score of ~15, this is not a dependency you adopt for leverage — it is a reference implementation. The realistic decision is "vendor the ~one component into our app" versus "spend 1–2 hours writing it ourselves," not "add composer require and move on." Frame it as a sourcing decision for a small UI affordance, not a platform bet.
  • Roadmap input for internal-tooling quarters. If ops/admin efficiency is a roadmap theme, this is a cheap candidate item to bundle into an existing admin-polish sprint alongside breadcrumbs, saved filters, and keyboard shortcuts. It is a filler ticket, not a headline initiative.
  • Support-ticket triage. If you are seeing complaints like "I lost my place," "the back button broke my filters," or "I keep landing on the wrong customer," this package is a data point that the issue is real and cheap to mitigate — useful for justifying a small slice of an admin-UX epic.
  • Use cases where it earns its keep: order → customer → order loops, support agents reviewing a record then returning to a filtered list, and any workflow where staff deep-link into Nova from Slack/email and need a way back to a meaningful origin.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You are already committed to Laravel Nova and this is a purely internal, low-blast-radius admin surface.
  • Your ops users routinely drill two or three levels deep into related resources and lose their list filters or scroll position.
  • Your team is comfortable vendoring the code — reading it, pinning it, and owning it — rather than treating Packagist as the contract.
  • You have a spare afternoon in an admin-polish sprint and want a working pattern to crib from instead of designing navigation behavior from scratch.
  • You are evaluating Nova itself and want to gauge how much of the "missing" polish you will end up hand-rolling.

Look elsewhere (or just build it) when:

  • You are not on Nova. This is worthless outside it, and Nova itself is a licensing decision you should evaluate on its own merits.
  • You need maintained, audited dependencies. Zero stars, zero dependents, no visible community validation, and a score of 0 mean there is no signal that this is actively maintained or version-tested against current Nova releases. A silent incompatibility after a Nova upgrade is a realistic failure mode for a package that hooks the admin UI.
  • You need real navigation semantics — breadcrumbs, preserved query strings, deep-linkable history, cross-panel state. One back button does not deliver that; scope it as a stopgap and plan the proper pattern.
  • Your own engineers can ship it in under a day. For most Laravel teams this is a small Blade/Vue asset behind a Nova service provider. Owning 40 lines beats owning an unmaintained transitive dependency.
  • Compliance or security review applies to admin surfaces. Anything injected into the admin header needs at least a read-through; an unvetted package is a review cost you may not want to spend on a back button.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is not a platform investment — it is a small, low-cost usability improvement for the internal admin panel our operations team lives in every day. It addresses a specific, recurring annoyance: staff lose their place and their filters when moving between records. The package itself is unproven (no community adoption), so the recommendation is not to depend on it but to borrow the approach and own the code — roughly a day of engineering, no licensing cost, no vendor relationship. Expected payoff is modest but real: less time re-filtering lists, fewer "where did I go" interruptions, faster onboarding for new ops hires. Treat it as a line item inside an existing admin-polish effort, not a standalone initiative.

To engineering: A Nova-specific back-navigation control, published as a small package with no adoption signals — zero stars, zero dependents. Treat it as a spec, not a supplier: review the source, lift the pattern into our own Nova tooling or app-level asset, and pin it to the Nova version we actually run. Do not add it to composer.json as an unpinned dependency on an admin surface without a read-through, and add a smoke test for the header injection across our Nova version so an upgrade failure is loud rather than silent.
