Autonumbering Laravel Package

virusphp/autonumbering

Generate sequential, formatted document numbers in Laravel with virusphp/autonumbering. Define prefixes, suffixes, padding, and reset periods per model, then let the package assign the next number automatically on create.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Framework upgrade sequencing. The single confirmed change in v1.5 is declared Laravel 10 support. That converts the package from a potential blocker into a non-issue for a Laravel 9 → 10 migration, and lets the platform upgrade move forward without a workaround, fork, or replacement dependency.
  • Build vs. buy. A maintainer shipping upstream compatibility within the same release cycle is the cheapest available signal of project health. It supports adopting rather than reimplementing, and it lowers the abandonment risk we'd otherwise have to price into the decision.
  • Roadmap timing. If our Laravel 10 upgrade lands in the next one to two quarters, adoption is viable now. If we are staying on Laravel 9 for longer, this release is neutral and we should pin to a version whose constraints still match our runtime.
  • Re-opening a previously closed decision. Any prior objection of the form "doesn't support our framework version" is now resolved. If this package was rejected or deferred for that reason, it belongs back on the shortlist.
  • What this release does not support. It says nothing about feature scope, API stability, test coverage, or fitness for a specific user-facing use case. Capability-level product decisions still require evaluating the package's actual API surface and documentation — this note is a compatibility signal only.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • We are on, or actively migrating to, Laravel 10, and the package's functional scope matches a real need in the product.
  • Maintenance cadence matters to us — we want dependencies that track upstream majors rather than pinning us to an aging framework.
  • The dependency footprint is small and the package is not load-bearing for core domain logic.

Look elsewhere when:

  • We remain on Laravel 8 or 9 and cannot upgrade. A "Laravel 10 update" in a minor version (v1.5) frequently means illuminate/* constraints were raised and older majors dropped — that is a breaking change for consumers even though the version number is a minor. Verify composer.json before assuming backward compatibility.
  • The release is the only maintenance activity in a long stretch; one compatibility bump does not establish a support commitment.
  • There is no CI matrix proving Laravel 10 is actually tested rather than merely allowed by constraints.
  • The functionality is core to our product and should not live behind a third-party dependency regardless of its health.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: a low-cost, low-risk dependency update that removes a blocker on our Laravel 10 migration. No new spend, no new vendor relationship, and it keeps us current on framework support rather than accumulating upgrade debt.

For engineering: v1.5 declares Laravel 10 compatibility. Before we commit, confirm three things in one evaluation pass — (1) whether Laravel 9 support was dropped, since that determines whether the upgrade must be sequenced with our own migration; (2) whether CI actually exercises Laravel 10; (3) that the package's functional scope still matches what we need it to do. Ask for a short timeboxed spike rather than an open-ended adoption.

Framing to use: "The blocker is gone; the remaining question is fit, not compatibility."
