Invert Color Laravel Package

villfa/invert-color

A small PHP package for inverting hex colors. Generate the opposite of any color for contrasting text, hover states, or dark-mode variants, with a simple API that works in plain PHP and Laravel projects alike.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature: dynamic theming and dark-mode surfaces — invert a user-configured brand/accent color to produce an on-the-fly variant without a design handoff or a hardcoded palette.
  • Feature: auto-contrast text and chrome — pick a readable label color for badges, tooltips, avatars, and overlays sitting on colors we don't control (customer branding, CMS themes, user-uploaded images).
  • Feature: placeholder and fallback rendering — deterministic background colors for empty avatars, image placeholders, and generated thumbnails, where "invert the seed color" is good enough.
  • Roadmap: enabler, not a bet. It belongs in the "unblock small UI work" bucket; it should never appear on a roadmap slide as a capability. Scored low (0.195) for a reason — value is real but tiny and substitutable.
  • Build vs buy: the honest answer is build. RGB inversion is ~15 lines. Buy only when (a) we already live in Composer, (b) we want a tested, namespaced implementation, and (c) we're willing to wrap it so the decision is reversible.
  • Explicitly not supported: WCAG/APCA contrast compliance, perceptual color space work (OKLCH/HSL), palette generation, complementary-color theory. Pure inversion ≠ accessible contrast, and treating it as such is how accessibility bugs ship.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • The stack is Laravel/PHP with Composer already in place, and the need is literally inverting a color value.
  • The requirement is one or two call sites — a label color, a placeholder, a theme variant — not a core rendering primitive.
  • There is no transitive dependency weight worth reviewing (verify in composer.lock; a utility like this should add nothing).
  • You can pin the version and accept single-maintainer risk. MIT means forking or vendoring is always available at near-zero cost.
  • You want the behavior behind your own interface (ColorService::invert()) so the dependency never leaks into domain code.

Look elsewhere or build in-house when:

  • Accessibility is in scope. Use a proper contrast/luminance library; inversion will fail AA on many mid-tone inputs.
  • You need color-space correctness (perceptual lightness, hue rotation, blending) — use a full color library instead.
  • Your org treats every dependency as a supply-chain line item. 15 stars and 0 dependents means effectively no third-party audit surface; that's a policy question, not a technical one.
  • The logic lands in one place. Inline the function, skip the require, keep the count flat.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Executives: This is a small MIT-licensed utility that solves exactly one narrow problem — producing an inverted color — which lets us ship dynamic theming and auto-contrast UI without a design loop for every variant. Cost and risk are effectively zero: no license encumbrance, no lock-in, no infrastructure. It is plumbing, not a platform bet, and it should be evaluated as such. If it disappears tomorrow, we replace it in an afternoon.

Engineering: One Composer require, namespaced, no service provider or config surface. Treat it as a leaf utility and route all usage through our own color abstraction so it's swappable or inlinable later. Two guardrails: do not use it to make accessibility contrast decisions — that's a different library and a different problem — and note the maintainer is a single person with no dependent ecosystem, so pin the version and budget roughly an hour to vendor the code if it goes stale.
