Php Semver Laravel Package

vierbergenlars/php-semver

A PHP implementation of Semantic Versioning: parse, validate, compare, and sort SemVer version strings, and check them against constraints like ^1.2, ~2.0, or ranges. Lightweight, dependency-free, and ideal for package managers, release tooling, and update checks in any PHP project.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature gating and upgrade nudges. Comparing a customer's installed/self-hosted version against a minimum version lets you ship conditional features, deprecation banners, and "upgrade to unlock" prompts without hard-coding release numbers across the app.
  • Marketplace and plugin compatibility. If you let third parties extend the product, semver range satisfaction (caret/tilde/ranges, pre-release precedence) is the gate that decides whether an add-on is installable against a given host version — this is the highest-value use case and the one most likely to be product-critical.
  • API version negotiation. Parsing a client-supplied version or Accept header and routing to a compatible response shape/behavior, which buys you time before a breaking-change cutover.
  • Release automation in the delivery pipeline. Sorting tags, computing next major/minor/patch, and validating that tags in CI actually conform — supports roadmap predictability ("we ship on a versioned cadence") rather than being a user-facing feature.
  • Build vs. buy: this is a buy, but a tiny one. It is a pure, stateless utility with no product differentiation. The decision is not "do we invest here" — it's "one to two days of integration to avoid hand-rolling version comparison." There's no roadmap leverage to gain from building it yourself.
  • Strongest fit: on-prem / self-hosted / multi-tenant installs where customer versions drift far from HEAD. The more version skew you support, the more you need real constraint logic rather than string equality.

When to Consider This Package

  • Consider it for internal tooling, CLI scripts, one-off migrations, or a prototype where a small dependency-free parser is convenient and maintenance risk is acceptable for the lifespan of the work.
  • Consider it only with eyes open: the repository is archived (last release May 2023) and the license is NOASSERTION. Archived means no security patches and no upstream answer when you hit an edge case. NOASSERTION means legal must clear it before it ships in a distributed artifact — usually quick, but it is a real gate for anything customer-facing.
  • Look elsewhere if version logic is product-critical — marketplace install gates, billing/entitlement checks tied to versions, or security-patch gating. In those paths an unmaintained parser is an availability and compliance liability.
  • The default alternative is composer/semver: MIT, maintained by the Composer project, effectively already present in every PHP install, and the implementation the ecosystem tests against. It wins on license clarity, maintenance, and npm-semver parity for range syntax. For genuinely trivial cases, normalized version_compare() plus a strict format check is enough and adds zero dependencies.
  • Look elsewhere if you need heavy pre-release/build-metadata nuance or exact npm-semver range semantics — small implementations diverge on edge cases, and you'd rather inherit those quirks from the library everyone else uses than discover them in production.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is not a product bet — it's a small, replaceable utility that saves engineering from hand-writing version comparison. It unlocks concrete capabilities (plugin compatibility gating, upgrade prompts, API version routing) at roughly one to two days of integration cost, with no vendor lock-in and no ongoing spend. Two caveats to note rather than escalate: the upstream project is archived and the license isn't machine-identifiable, so if we adopt it we own the code from day one and should route the license past legal before it reaches a shipped artifact. Blast radius is contained by keeping it behind an internal interface.

For engineering: Pure PHP, no runtime dependencies, well-understood problem domain. Adopt it wrapped behind our own VersionConstraint interface so swapping to composer/semver is a single-file change. Pin the version and vendor it — there will be no upstream fixes. Recommended posture: use composer/semver for anything customer-facing or entitlement-related, and allow this package only in low-risk internal tooling where the archived status is an acceptable trade for a small footprint.
