Php Enhanced Enum Laravel Package

vicgutt/php-enhanced-enum

A PHP package that enhances native enums with extra helpers and conveniences, making them easier to work with in Laravel and plain PHP projects alike.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for enum ergonomics. Helps you decide whether to add a tiny internal trait (values/names/options/toArray/is helpers) versus pulling a third-party dependency. This package is essentially a thin convenience layer over native PHP 8.1 enums, so the real question is whether the helpers it offers are worth an external dependency.
  • Standardizing enum conventions across the codebase. If adopted, it sets a house style for how enums expose their cases to Blade selects, API resources, validation rules, and seeders — useful for consistency in a growing domain model.
  • API and admin UI contract decisions. Convenience methods like "all values" or "case map" feed directly into form dropdowns, filter parameter validation, and JSON output shapes, which affects API design and front-end contracts.
  • Roadmap scoping for enum-heavy features. Useful when planning status machines, roles/permissions, notification types, or payment states — i.e., deciding whether enums are your source of truth for those domains.
  • Low-priority modernization work. Since it's a drop-in enhancement, it can be scheduled as part of a PHP 8.1+ upgrade cleanup rather than a standalone initiative.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You're on PHP 8.1+ (native enums available) and Laravel, and your team has agreed enums are the standard for fixed sets of domain values.
  • You want a small, MIT-licensed, drop-in trait and are comfortable vendoring or forking it — the API surface is narrow enough that reading the source is quick.
  • You only need basic helpers (list of values/names, array conversion, simple comparisons) and don't need label translation, description metadata, or DB casting support.
  • You're prototyping and optimizing for speed of implementation over dependency longevity.

Look elsewhere (or write your own ~30-line trait) when:

  • Maintenance risk matters. Zero stars, zero dependents, and no releases since November 2022 signal an unmaintained project. For production, the cost of a small internal trait is likely lower than the risk of a stale dependency.
  • You need richer features — translated labels, descriptions, colors/icons, or validation integration. Laravel's native Rule::enum (Laravel 9+) plus enum casting covers most of that, and packages like archtechx/enums or spatie/laravel-enum are far better maintained.
  • Your architecture requires strict serialization or backward compatibility guarantees — you'd want explicit, tested, in-house behavior rather than implicit helpers.
  • You're in a regulated or security-sensitive codebase where unmaintained transitive dependencies are a policy concern.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a micro-library that adds a few convenience methods to PHP's built-in enum feature. It's MIT-licensed and cheap to adopt, but it's a near-abandoned open-source project with no meaningful community adoption. Recommendation: do not add it as a production dependency. The value it provides is small enough that a short internal helper delivers the same benefit with zero third-party risk.

For engineering: Native PHP 8.1 enums already cover the hard parts. This package saves a handful of lines in Blade and controllers. Before adopting, diff its method list against what we'd write ourselves — likely under an hour of work — and against Laravel's built-in enum casting and Rule::enum validation. If we want an established library instead, evaluate archtechx/enums or spatie/laravel-enum first. If we do adopt this one, pin the version, vendor the source if licensing allows, and treat it as a candidate for replacement.

Bottom line: Low strategic value, high relative maintenance risk. Skip it; build the minimal helper internally and revisit only if enum handling grows complex enough to justify a maintained package.
