Order Laravel Package

vanilo/order

Vanilo Order provides the core order management layer for Laravel e-commerce applications built on Vanilo. It includes order and order item models, status handling, adjustments, totals, and the business logic needed to create, calculate, and process customer orders.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • vanilo/order is not a standalone library; it is one module of the Vanilo commerce suite and is registered through Concord (konekt/concord). Adopting it means adopting Concord's module lifecycle, contract-binding conventions, and the sibling packages it depends on (vanilo/contracts, and in practice vanilo/checkout, vanilo/payment, vanilo/shipment, vanilo/cart to get a working flow).
  • The module occupies the highest-coupling seat in the domain: the order aggregate is the schema and behavior that everything else (checkout, payments, fulfillment, admin, reporting) reads and writes. Cart, product, and tax modules are replaceable; the order model is not. This is the single most important evaluation point — the lock-in cost is concentrated here, not in the peripheral packages.
  • Intended extension path is contract substitution: bind your own implementation to the module's interfaces in a service provider rather than editing vendor code. That is a defensible architecture, but it requires the team to genuinely understand Concord's binding and module-registration model, not just Laravel service providers.

Integration feasibility

  • Composer-installable, MIT-licensed, migration-driven. Schema is loaded from the package rather than published/edited, so host-app changes to the order tables must go through additive migrations of your own — expect to build a thin "custom columns" migration layer from day one.
  • Feasible as the core of a greenfield Laravel commerce build. Not feasible as a bolt-on order table inside an existing custom application: you would inherit the schema, the Concord bootstrap, and the contract expectations without gaining the surrounding flow.
  • Customization surface: subclass/extend the order and order-item models, bind contracts, listen to the module's domain events. Status handling is the rough edge — Vanilo has historically represented payment/shipping status via konekt/php-enum and moved toward native PHP enums in later majors. Confirm which representation the target version uses before designing any external integration against those values.

Technical risk

  • Adoption signal is weak. 35 stars and 0 dependents on this package means very little third-party validation of the exact code path you will depend on. The umbrella project has more traction, but the risk profile of an individual module is set by its own release cadence and issue traffic.
  • Version-matrix fragility. The package is only safe to install as part of a coherently resolved suite. Pulling vanilo/order at a floating constraint alongside a hand-picked vanilo/checkout is a reliable way to produce class-not-found and signature-mismatch failures.
  • Schema churn across majors. Order schemas in commerce frameworks change materially between major versions (address representation, status columns, money handling). Assume a non-trivial upgrade project per major, not a composer update.
  • Single-maintainer concentration. MIT removes licensing risk but not continuity risk. Verify whether commercial support exists and what it covers.
  • Low blast-radius failures are rare here. Most failure modes for this module surface at checkout, i.e., at the revenue path.

Key questions

  1. Which Vanilo major are we targeting, and does its supported Laravel/PHP matrix match our platform roadmap for the next 24 months?
  2. Are payment and shipping status modeled as native enums or enum objects in that version, and what is the serialized form in the database?
  3. Is the order aggregate the system of record, or does an ERP/OMS own it? If the latter, this module is the wrong layer to standardize on.
  4. What is our extension strategy — subclass + contract binding, or fork? Forking a low-adoption module is a permanent maintenance tax.
  5. Do we need multi-currency, multi-channel, B2B pricing, or partial fulfillment semantics? Confirm which are native, which are extensions, and which are absent.
  6. Who owns upstream tracking internally, and what is the budgeted upgrade cadence?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Requires Laravel (currently 10/11/12-class versions) and PHP 8.1+, plus Concord. Database-agnostic across MySQL/Postgres/SQLite, but SQLite is a dev convenience, not a production choice for order workloads.
  • If the platform is not already Laravel, this evaluation ends here — the package's value is inseparable from the framework it bootstraps into.

Migration path

  • From Shopify/Magento/legacy custom: map legacy order status onto Vanilo's payment_status + shipping_status pair; this is rarely 1:1 and needs an explicit mapping table signed off by operations, not just engineering.
  • Preserve legacy identifiers in an additive column (e.g., legacy_order_ref) on the orders table via your own migration, so reconciliation and customer-service lookups survive cutover.
  • Line items store product snapshots (name, price, quantity at time of order), so historical orders can be backfilled without needing historical product records — verify this against the target version's schema before assuming it.
  • Addresses are embedded on the order rather than normalized; backfilling from a normalized source is straightforward but the resulting data is harder to query — plan reporting views accordingly.

Compatibility

  • Always resolve via the suite (framework/metapackage or a fully pinned set) rather than installing vanilo/order alone. Lock exact versions in composer.json; treat minor bumps as reviewable changes, not automatic.
  • Run the module against your target database engine and Laravel version in a throwaway app before committing to a design. This is a one-day spike that de-risks weeks.

Sequencing

  1. Spike (1 week): throwaway Laravel app, full suite, place an order end-to-end. Confirms status representation, schema, and extension points.
  2. Contracts-first design: decide which order interfaces we implement vs. use as-is; document the binding map.
  3. Custom order model + bindings: additive columns, subclassed behavior, event wiring.
  4. Checkout/cart integration: the first real integration surface; do not parallelize with step 3.
  5. Back-office/admin and reporting: read paths, indexes, exports.
  6. Data migration and dual-write/reconciliation: shadow-run before cutover.
  7. Cutover behind a feature flag with a rollback path that keeps the legacy order table writable for at least one billing cycle.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Pin versions; budget a recurring allowance for upstream major upgrades rather than treating them as one-off projects. Because the order schema is the churn epicenter, every upgrade is a data migration, not just a dependency bump.
  • Maintain a thin "host app customizations" layer (migrations, model subclasses, bindings) that is reviewed like first-party code. Keep it small enough to audit against each upstream release.

Support

  • No implied SLA from the package. Confirm commercial support availability and scope in writing before committing to the revenue path. Regardless of the answer, assume internal ownership: one named engineer accountable for upstream tracking, with a documented override path if the project stalls.

Scaling

  • Order writes are bursty (checkout) and order reads are heavy and analytical (admin, customer service, finance). These want different things: keep the write path transactional and minimal, and push reporting to read replicas or a separate analytics store rather than indexing the transactional tables into submission.
  • Embedded address/JSON columns and status columns will need targeted indexes as volume grows; plan for this explicitly rather than discovering it at peak season.
  • Emit order state changes as events onto a queue for downstream consumers (ERP, fulfillment, notifications). Do not let synchronous third-party calls sit inside the checkout transaction.

Failure modes

  • Silent binding error: a misconfigured contract binding resolves to the default implementation instead of yours — works in dev, wrong behavior in production. Add a startup assertion or test that asserts the resolved class.
  • Migration collision: package migrations interleaving with host migrations on a fresh deploy or a rollback. Test full migrate:fresh and rollback in CI.
  • Enum/status mismatch: status values serialized differently than an integration expects, breaking fulfillment or reconciliation without an exception being thrown. Contract-test the status values.
  • Partial order persistence: order header committed without line items or vice versa. Wrap order creation in a transaction and verify the module does too.
  • Upstream abandonment: no security patching, no Laravel-version compatibility. Mitigation is the internal override path above, decided in advance.

Ramp-up

  • ~1–2 weeks for a competent Laravel engineer to internalize Concord's module and binding conventions.
  • ~2–4 weeks further to be productive in the order domain model and its integration surfaces.
  • Add deliberate onboarding time for finance/ops stakeholders on the payment/shipping status semantics — that mapping is where operational incidents originate, not in the PHP.
