Product Decisions This Supports

  • Commerce engine selection. This package only matters as a downstream consequence of "do we build our storefront on Vanilo?" If Vanilo is on the table, this module is the reason a European checkout is a configuration task rather than a sprint. If Vanilo is off the table, the package is irrelevant — it is an adapter, not a standalone library.
  • Build vs. buy for payment integration. The alternative is hand-rolling an adapter against Mollie's REST API and wiring it into Vanilo's payment gateway contract, plus webhook handling and status reconciliation. Buying here means roughly days of work saved at the cost of an upstream dependency with a single maintainer.
  • Payment method coverage as a roadmap lever. Mollie's value in the Benelux/EU market is breadth: iDEAL, Bancontact, SEPA Direct Debit, cards, and pay-later/wallet options. An adapter surfaces most of that as config toggles, so "add a payment method" becomes a feature-flag and compliance conversation rather than an engineering project. Verify the adapter's actual per-method and refund coverage before committing it to a roadmap slide.
  • Market sequencing. If the go-to-market plan starts in the Netherlands/Belgium/Germany, this package de-risks launch. If the plan is US-first or global-first, it's a dead end and the roadmap should be built around a different gateway from day one.
  • Maintenance-risk posture. 2 stars and 0 dependents is a real signal: effectively zero community validation, almost certainly one primary maintainer. That doesn't disqualify it — MIT-licensed, small surface area, and the code is readable — but it should drive a decision to pin the version, vendor it if patched, and own a fork contingency rather than treat it as a stable platform dependency.
  • MVP scoping. For an early-stage Laravel store with low transaction volume, this is the cheapest credible path to "we accept payments." It is not the right foundation for a payments roadmap involving marketplace splits, multi-party payouts, or complex dunning — those need Mollie Connect or a bespoke orchestration layer.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • You are already committed to Vanilo as your commerce layer. There is no scenario where this package is useful outside that context.
  • Your revenue is concentrated in EU/EEA markets where Mollie is a first-class PSP, and consolidating on one provider (cards + local methods + SEPA) has operational value over stitching Stripe plus a local acquirer.
  • You want webhook-driven payment status updates integrated with Vanilo's order lifecycle rather than building that state machine yourself.
  • Volume is modest and the cost of an outage or a missed edge case is recoverable — i.e., you can tolerate a thin, lightly-maintained integration.
  • You are comfortable owning a fork. Treat the upstream as a starting point, not a service.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are not on Vanilo. Use Mollie's official PHP client directly; there is no reason to route through a framework-specific adapter.
  • You need recurring billing, subscription dunning, or proration. Confirm adapter support explicitly — if it isn't there, the "cheap" integration becomes an open-ended build.
  • You need marketplace payouts, split payments, or multi-seller settlement. This is Mollie Connect territory and will require custom work regardless of adapter.
  • You need contractual SLAs, vendor support, or a payment layer that survives a maintainer disappearing. A 2-star, 0-dependent module does not clear that bar; budget for a paid support arrangement or an in-house fork.
  • You are US-first or APAC-first. Mollie's footprint makes this the wrong primary rail, and the adapter inherits that limitation.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, MIT-licensed connector that lets a Vanilo-based store accept Mollie payments — iDEAL, cards, SEPA, and local European methods — without custom integration work. It is not a product and not a strategic investment; it's glue. The license cost is zero and the build cost avoided is measured in engineering days. The relevant risk is not legal or financial, it's continuity: the module has essentially no adoption and likely a single maintainer, so we should pin the version, cover it with our own integration tests against Mollie's test environment, and budget roughly a day per quarter for upgrades and patches. If Mollie is our European payment rail, this gets us to market faster; if we later move off Vanilo or expand beyond Europe, this component gets replaced, and the replacement cost is small.

To engineering: Treat it as a thin adapter over the official Mollie SDK and Vanilo's payment gateway contract. Read the source before adopting — it's small enough to audit in an afternoon. Add an end-to-end test in Mollie test mode covering the payment lifecycle and webhook reconciliation, keep the version pinned, and keep the fork path open. Do not let it become load-bearing infrastructure that nobody on the team has read.
