Zipcodevalidator Laravel Package

uvinum/zipcodevalidator

PHP package for validating ZIP and postal codes by country. It offers country-aware validation rules so Laravel and PHP applications can check address formats against supported regional formats, useful for checkout, registration, and other address forms.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Checkout / signup address forms: whether to block or warn on malformed postal codes per country — a conversion-rate vs. data-quality tradeoff that needs a deliberate decision, not a default.
  • Market expansion planning: when scoping a launch in a new country, this answers "how much locale-specific validation work do we actually need?"
  • Build vs. buy vs. fork: frames the choice between owning a postal-code rules table in-house, adopting a library, or paying for a commercial address-verification API.
  • Data quality and operations: catches format errors at input time, reducing undeliverable shipments, billing failures, and CRM address junk.
  • Fraud and risk signals: postal-code/country consistency is a weak but cheap signal in risk scoring.
  • Roadmap sizing: a low-effort enabler for internationalization epics — likely a 1–2 day ticket, not a standalone initiative.
  • Support cost: fewer "my order shipped to the wrong address" tickets caused by typos.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You need format-level validation (does this look like a valid postal code for this country?) across many countries in PHP.
  • Your stack is Laravel and you want a self-contained ruleset with no external HTTP dependency, per-request cost, or vendor account.
  • You're running a spike or prototype and want to avoid hand-writing regexes for 200+ countries.
  • You are willing to vendor or fork the code — you're treating it as a reference dataset, not a maintained dependency.

Look elsewhere or build in-house when:

  • Maintenance risk matters: last release 2017, 13 stars, zero dependents, no active maintainer, no security-patch or data-refresh cadence. That is a hard fail for anything on the critical checkout path.
  • Laravel/PHP compatibility is unverified — a 2017 package likely predates current Laravel versions and PHP 8; budget for patching.
  • You need address verification (does this address actually exist and is it deliverable) — use a commercial API (Loqate, SmartyStreets, Google Address Validation) instead.
  • You need country-specific edge cases that change over time (postal systems get reformed). Stale validation data can be worse than none.
  • You're in a regulated or high-volume context requiring a support SLA or CVE response.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Executives: This is a small, free (MIT) utility that checks whether a postal code looks valid for a given country. It's cheap to trial and improves address quality at checkout, but it is effectively abandoned — no release since 2017 and almost no adoption. My recommendation is not to take a direct dependency on it. Treat it as a free reference for country-format rules, spend a day or two internalizing what we need, and either write a thin in-house validator or adopt a maintained library. If we want real address verification that materially reduces failed deliveries, budget for a commercial API — this package cannot do that.

Engineering: MIT-licensed, small surface area, no runtime services or external calls. It provides a per-country format/regex table. Because it is unmaintained and unverified against current Laravel and PHP versions, plan to fork and own it or copy the relevant rules into our codebase. Do not put it on the checkout critical path without tests and a data-refresh story.

Product and design: Enables better inline validation on international address forms and modestly fewer failed deliveries, but the win depends entirely on keeping rules current. Frame the work as a small enabler inside international expansion, not a standalone bet.
