Client Bundle Laravel Package

userbase/client-bundle

Symfony bundle integrating the Userbase PHP client. Register and configure the client through bundle configuration, then inject it as a service to add user authentication, sessions, and encrypted per-user data storage to your Symfony application with minimal setup.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for identity and user management. This bundle exists to wire a Symfony application to the UserBase user-management service. If you are evaluating "do we keep maintaining our own users/roles/permissions tables, or adopt a hosted identity service," this package is the cheapest possible integration path to test that decision — but it is only the client side; the real buy decision is on UserBase itself.
  • Standardising auth across a multi-service estate. The value of a client bundle is repeatability: five Symfony services authenticating against one user store and one permission model is a product decision about consistency, onboarding, and support burden, not just a technical one. This is the artefact that makes that decision cheap to execute on Symfony.
  • Roadmap sequencing for SSO / user directory / RBAC features. If your roadmap contains "single sign-on," "customer-managed roles," or "team/tenant membership," adopting an external user store early avoids a costly migration later. Conversely, if those items are two or more quarters out, this is premature.
  • Buy vs. build for the integration layer itself. The bundle is glue code with a small surface area, which means the meaningful lock-in risk sits with the service, not this repository. That distinction should drive whether you treat it as a dependency or as a reference implementation to fork.
  • Not a Laravel decision. The description is explicit: this is a Symfony bundle. For a Laravel-first product this package does not directly support a build decision — it flags that UserBase has a Symfony-first integration story and you would be writing the Laravel adapter yourself.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You are already a Symfony shop and already leaning toward UserBase as the system of record for users, roles, or permissions. The bundle removes days of plumbing and encodes the vendor's intended integration shape.
  • You are running internal or back-office services where a zero-star, single-vendor package is an acceptable risk profile and the blast radius of an auth outage or breaking change is contained.
  • You need a spike, not a commitment. Because the surface area is thin, it is a fast way to prove out assumptions about UserBase's data model and session/permission semantics before committing engineering time.
  • You can vendor or fork it comfortably. Zero dependents and zero stars means effectively no community backstop; adoption should assume you own the code the day you install it, and you should be comfortable reading and patching it.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Your stack is Laravel-first. You would be maintaining an unsupported adapter; use the underlying UserBase SDK/HTTP API directly, or evaluate Laravel-native options (Sanctum, Passport, Fortify, or a mature hosted IdP) where the ecosystem, docs, and hiring pool are real.
  • You need vendor due diligence for a customer-facing or regulated product. No stars, no dependents, and a single-organisation maintainer will not satisfy a security questionnaire or a procurement review on identity — the highest-risk domain in most products.
  • You require standards compliance out of the box (OIDC, SAML, SCIM provisioning) or contractual SLAs, breach notification terms, and a published deprecation policy.
  • The last release date is the only maintenance signal you have. A March 2025 release is a positive, but with no dependents there is no evidence of production use; treat it as unproven rather than stable.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: Identity is commodity infrastructure. Building and maintaining our own user, role, and permission management is ongoing cost with no differentiation and real security exposure. Adopting a shared user service removes that burden and lets product teams ship features instead of auth. The integration cost on Symfony is small — this bundle exists precisely to keep that cost small — so the decision to evaluate is low-risk and time-boxed. The decision to commit is a vendor question, not a code question, and should be made on the service's maturity, not on this package.

For engineering: This is a thin Symfony client for UserBase, published by the vendor, last released March 2025, with no known dependents. Treat it as a documented integration pattern rather than a battle-tested library: read it before adopting, expect to own the code, and pin versions. The small surface area is an advantage — it can be vendored or replaced without a rewrite — and it means our real dependency is the UserBase service and its API contract, which is where diligence effort should go.

Recommendation: Time-box a one-sprint proof of concept behind a feature flag on a non-critical service. Success criteria: the UserBase data model maps cleanly to our roles and tenancy needs, and we are comfortable owning the client code. Do not place it on a customer-facing critical path, and do not adopt it on Laravel without first deciding we are prepared to maintain our own adapter.
