Queries Laravel Package

useless-soft/queries

Laravel query utilities from Useless Soft. Organize reusable database queries into dedicated, testable classes, chain filters, and keep controllers and models lean. Simple to install and framework-friendly, ideal for cleaner data access without heavy abstractions.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for query-layer abstractions. This package sits in the space of reusable query objects / query-builder helpers — the kind of thing teams often hand-roll. The metadata alone (0 stars, 0 dependents, archived, NOASSERTION license) makes the buy decision effectively a "build" decision: there is no vendor, no maintenance contract, and no community to inherit risk from.
  • Roadmap de-risking. Adopting an archived dependency creates a forced roadmap item later ("replace or fork the query layer") with no upstream to negotiate with. That future cost belongs in this sprint's estimate, not next year's.
  • Pattern evaluation, not code adoption. The README/source may still inform an internal design decision (e.g., whether to standardize on query objects, scopes, or repositories). This is the one decision the package can genuinely support — as a reference implementation, not a dependency.
  • Legal/procurement gates. NOASSERTION means the license is unrecognized or absent. That is a blocker for any commercial distribution or open-sourcing decision and should be flagged before engineering time is spent, not after.

When to Consider This Package

  • Only as a read-only reference if an engineer is evaluating query-object patterns and wants a worked example. Clone it, read it, re-implement.
  • Fork-and-own if, after code review, the implementation is small and clean enough that your team is willing to accept full maintenance ownership — and legal clears the unclear license. Budget for that explicitly; "archived" means you are the maintainer now.
  • Do not consider it for production use where any of the following hold: you need security patches, you distribute the code to customers, you have an OSS compliance policy, or you cannot afford a rewrite. Zero dependents means zero field-testing — you would be the first production user of an abandoned library.
  • Look elsewhere for maintained alternatives (Laravel's native Eloquent scopes, first-party query-builder features, or a small in-house abstraction). The opportunity score here is low precisely because the maturity signals are absent, not because the idea is bad.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: "We evaluated a third-party package for our query layer. It is archived, has zero users, and carries an unclear license — adopting it would mean inheriting maintenance with no vendor or community behind it. Recommendation: do not adopt. The underlying pattern may still be useful, so we'll borrow the idea and build a small internal version we control."

For engineering: "This is a reference, not a dependency. Read the source for pattern inspiration if you're designing query objects; do not add it to composer.json. If anyone feels strongly about reusing it, the ask is a fork with named ownership, a license review, and a stated plan for the first security patch — otherwise, we build the 100–200 lines ourselves."

Net PM position: reject as a dependency, mine as a pattern, and record the "unclear license + archived" combination as a standing checklist item for future package evaluations — this one is a cheap rehearsal for that gate.
