Laravel Hackathon Starter Laravel Package

unicodeveloper/laravel-hackathon-starter

Laravel Hackathon Starter is a ready-to-use boilerplate for hackathons and rapid prototyping. It bundles social authentication, API tokens, user management, email verification, password reset, and a clean Bootstrap UI, so you can skip setup and ship your next idea faster. Ideal for MVPs.

Getting Started

  • Treat unicodeveloper/laravel-hackathon-starter as a starter repository, not a Composer package you require into an existing app. Clone or composer create-project it into a fresh MVP, then own the code.
  • First steps: clone the repo, install PHP/JS dependencies, copy .env.example to .env, set APP_KEY, configure your database, then run migrations and seeders. Start with php artisan serve and verify register/login/dashboard flows.
  • Look first at the README, app/Http/routes.php or routes/web.php, .env.example, config/services.php, the auth controllers/views, and database/migrations/database/seeds.
  • Best first use case: a hackathon MVP that needs working authentication, social login, a dashboard shell, flash messages, and a familiar Laravel MVC structure in minutes rather than hours.

Implementation Patterns

  • Fork per project: keep a pristine copy of the starter, then create a new branch/repo for each hackathon. Commit the untouched baseline first so you can diff your MVP changes.
  • Configure auth/social login early: add provider credentials in .env, wire provider callbacks in config/services.php, and test each OAuth redirect URI locally and in staging before demo day.
  • Extend the existing auth shell: add fields to User, migrations, profile views, and validation following the starter’s existing controller/view conventions. Protect new MVP routes with Laravel’s auth middleware.
  • Reuse the UI patterns: follow the starter’s layouts, form partials, validation error display, and flash-message conventions for new CRUD screens. This keeps a small team consistent under time pressure.
  • Seed demo data: use seeders for sample records and a known demo account so the app is presentable immediately after migrate --seed.
  • Prune before building: remove unused social providers, routes, views, and assets at the start. A smaller surface is easier to debug and deploy.
  • Deploy with env parity: set the same OAuth callback URLs, APP_KEY, database, mail, and session settings in production. Run migrations during deploy and verify storage permissions.

Gotchas and Tips

  • The stack is old. The last release was in 2016 and targets an EOL Laravel/PHP era. Use it for short-lived hackathon MVPs or as a reference; don’t ship it to production without a serious upgrade and dependency/security audit.
  • It is not a library. There are no meaningful package updates to pull in. Once cloned, you maintain the auth, views, config, and dependencies yourself. For modern Laravel, Laravel Breeze/Jetstream is usually the better starting point.
  • OAuth is the usual failure point. Provider APIs, scopes, and callback rules change. Verify exact redirect URIs, HTTPS requirements, client IDs/secrets, and session/cookie settings before blaming the starter.
  • Clear config often: after .env changes run php artisan config:clear; use php artisan route:list, php artisan migrate:status, and storage/logs/laravel.log when routes, migrations, or auth callbacks misbehave.
  • Extension points: replace Socialite drivers, add policies/events, swap frontend assets, or extract only the auth/dashboard scaffolding into a newer Laravel app. Keep secrets out of version control and remove unused providers to reduce attack surface.
