I18N Routing Bundle Laravel Package

umpirsky/i18n-routing-bundle

Symfony bundle for internationalized routing: define routes with locale-specific paths and prefixes, so URLs are translated per language while sharing the same controller. Handles locale detection and generation for multilingual applications.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit — poor, framework mismatch. umpirsky/i18n-routing-bundle is a Symfony bundle, not a Laravel package. It integrates via Symfony's bundle system, DI container, and Routing component extension points — none of which exist in Laravel. There is no service provider, no facade, no Laravel-aware config publishing. Adopting it means either (a) standing up a parallel Symfony Routing instance inside a Laravel app, or (b) porting the logic. Both are heavier than reimplementing the behavior natively.

Integration feasibility — low. The package is pre-Symfony 4 era (bundle-registration conventions, likely PHP 5.x/7.0-era constraints). Modern Laravel (9/10/11) requires PHP 8.1+ and symfony/* ^6/^7 components; Composer will almost certainly refuse to resolve. Any integration requires forking, loosening constraints, and back-porting type declarations — at which point we own the code.

Technical risk — high and concentrated in abandonment. 3 stars, 0 dependents, score 0.045. That is not a "small but stable" signal; it is an effectively dead upstream. No CVE feed, no security advisories, no PHP-version treadmill. The functional risk is low (i18n routing is a solved, well-understood problem), but the dependency risk is near-total.

Key questions for the business owner:

  • What behavior do we actually need — locale-prefixed paths, default-locale prefix omission, hreflang emission, Accept-Language negotiation, or localized route slugs? (These are separable requirements; the package only addresses the first two well.)
  • Is there any Symfony surface in our estate that would make this bundle relevant at all? If no, this is a non-candidate.
  • Do we have a locale strategy already (Laravel __(), mcamara/laravel-localization, per-locale route groups)? Duplication is the real cost here.
  • Is anyone prepared to own a fork indefinitely? If the answer is no, the evaluation ends.

Bottom line: low opportunity score reflects reality. The correct posture is harvest the idea, not the code — the concept (locale-prefixed routes with minimal dispatch overhead) is worth ~50–100 lines of Laravel-native code.

Integration Approach

Stack fit — build native, don't bridge. Laravel already gives us the primitives: a Route::group(['prefix' => '{locale}', ...]) with a whereIn constraint on supported locales, a SetLocale middleware that validates and negotiates, and URL::defaults() to make route() helpers locale-aware without touching call sites. That reproduces the bundle's core value with zero external dependency and full framework idiom.

Migration path. If legacy Symfony code depends on this bundle, extract the behavioral spec — supported locale list, default-locale prefix policy, redirect rules for unsupported locales, route-name mapping — and re-implement it. Do not lift the source; its internal API and PHP idioms will not survive contact with PHP 8 and Laravel's container.

Compatibility. Assume it will not install. Plan for a fork-and-patch only if a spike proves the native version cannot meet a specific edge case (e.g., per-locale localized slugs across dozens of routes). Even then, prefer a maintained alternative over resurrecting this one.

Sequencing:

  1. Spike (1–2 days): reproduce locale-prefix + default-locale-fallback routing in a throwaway Laravel branch. This is the decision gate.
  2. Decide: native build vs. fork. Default answer is native; escalate to fork only on a demonstrated gap.
  3. Implement: middleware (locale negotiation + validation + redirect on unsupported), route registrar, URL::defaults wiring, canonical/hreflang output.
  4. Harden: feature tests per locale, 404/redirect assertions, cache-key isolation by locale.
  5. Document: supported locales, prefix policy, and how to add a locale — this is what the bundle never gave us anyway.

Operational Impact

Maintenance. Zero upstream cadence. If adopted or forked, we inherit indefinite ownership: PHP-version bumps, Laravel-version bumps, and security review with no external signal. Budget roughly 10–15% of one engineer ongoing for a fork; ~0% for the native version beyond normal product maintenance.

Support. No maintainer, no issue triage, no CVE monitoring. This package would not clear a supply-chain or dependency-approval gate in most organizations — worth stating plainly to stakeholders rather than discovering it at security review.

Scaling. Performance is a non-issue in either direction. Both Symfony and Laravel compile routes to a cached matcher; locale prefixing adds a constant-factor constraint check, not a per-request I/O cost. The package's "minimal performance cost" claim is true but unremarkable — the native Laravel equivalent is equally cheap. Do not let a performance argument drive this decision.

Failure modes to watch in any implementation (package or native):

  • SEO duplicate content — the same page reachable at /foo and /en/foo without a canonical or redirect. Highest business impact, lowest technical visibility.
  • Redirect loops in Accept-Language negotiation when the negotiated locale is unsupported or the default locale is itself prefixed.
  • Cache poisoning — locale leaking into or being omitted from cache keys for localized content.
  • Route-name collisions when prefixing, causing route() to emit the wrong locale in emails, sitemaps, or API responses.
  • Composer resolution breakage on the next PHP or Laravel upgrade (applies only if adopted/forked — the strongest argument against).

Ramp-up. For the native approach: half a day for a mid-level Laravel developer familiar with middleware and route groups; ~1 day of review and test-writing. For the bundle: days of Symfony-container archaeology plus Composer surgery, with no documentation to lean on — a poor use of engineering time for a problem the framework already solves.

Recommendation. Do not adopt. Treat this package as a design reference for the locale-prefix pattern, implement it natively in Laravel, and close the evaluation with the spike result as the record.
