Easyadmin Tree Bundle Laravel Package

umanit/easyadmin-tree-bundle

Umanit EasyAdmin Tree Bundle adds hierarchical tree views to Symfony EasyAdmin. Display parent-child entities as an expandable tree, reorder nodes with drag and drop, and manage nested records directly in your admin backend. Ideal for categories, pages, menus, and other self-referencing entities.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for admin-panel tree UI. If the product needs hierarchical category/content management inside an existing EasyAdmin (Symfony) back office, this package is a candidate to avoid hand-rolling drag-and-drop tree, reordering, and parent-child move logic — roughly a 1–3 day build for an experienced Symfony dev, so the buy case is thin but nonzero.
  • Roadmap input for CMS/catalog admin features. Supports scoping decisions around category nesting depth, drag-to-reorder, and move-subtree operations; useful as a reference implementation when writing acceptance criteria even if we don't adopt it.
  • Not a Laravel decision. This is a Symfony bundle for EasyAdmin, not a Laravel package. If our stack is Laravel, this scores zero on fit regardless of its merits — it informs only a "what would this cost us to replicate in Laravel" (e.g., via Filament's nested-set/adjacency-list packages) estimate.
  • Ecosystem signal. 23 stars and no release since October 2022 indicate a solo-maintained, low-traffic plugin. That supports a "do not put on critical path" decision and argues against adopting EasyAdmin as a platform bet on the strength of its plugin ecosystem.
  • Vendor/architecture review. If we already run EasyAdmin, this is a low-risk evaluation spike (hours, not weeks) before committing to a bespoke admin module.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only when all of these hold:

  • The application is Symfony and already standardized on EasyAdmin for back-office CRUD.
  • The entity model is a straightforward adjacency-list or nested-set category tree (categories, tags, menu items, org units) and the admin needs parent selection, ordering, and indented display.
  • The feature is internal-facing and non-differentiating — admin UX is not a competitive surface.
  • The team can accept the code as-is and vendor or fork it, including patching it for newer EasyAdmin major versions.

Look elsewhere — or build in-house — when:

  • The stack is Laravel. Use the framework's own admin tooling; this bundle is not installable or useful there.
  • EasyAdmin has moved past the version this targets. With no release since Oct 2022, compatibility with current EasyAdmin releases is unverified and likely broken; a fork is the realistic path.
  • The tree is core domain logic (permissions inheritance, pricing rollups, deep nesting, multi-parent/DAG structures). An admin-display plugin is the wrong layer for that.
  • You need support, SLAs, or security responsiveness. Single maintainer, low star count, stale release cadence — none of that is available.
  • A better-maintained sibling exists in the EasyAdmin/Symfony ecosystem, or the requirement can be met with a generic JS tree widget plus entity fields.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one paragraph): This is a small, community-maintained add-on that gives the Symfony EasyAdmin back office a drag-and-drop category tree. It is not a Laravel package and not applicable to our Laravel products. It has 23 stars and has not been updated since late 2022, so it carries real maintenance and security-update risk. Our recommendation: do not adopt as a dependency, but treat it as a cheap reference design — a one-day spike at most — if and when we scope hierarchical category management in an admin panel. Expected saving versus building the same UI ourselves is on the order of a few developer-days, which does not justify the ongoing ownership cost of a stale third-party plugin.

For engineering:

  • Stack mismatch first: Symfony + EasyAdmin only. Confirm target EasyAdmin version before any spike; assume incompatibility with current releases and budget for a fork.
  • The scope is narrow — tree rendering, parent selection, reordering. It does not solve nested-set migrations, permissions inheritance, or deep-tree performance. Those remain our problem.
  • Recommend a time-boxed evaluation (≤1 day): install in a sandbox, verify it works against our EasyAdmin version, read the source (small enough to audit fully), then decide fork-and-own vs. reimplement. Do not take it as a transitive dependency in a product we ship to customers.
  • If we replicate the pattern in Laravel, evaluate first-party/nested-set packages in the Laravel admin ecosystem rather than porting this code.
