Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for core list management: v0.12.0 delivers filters, sorting, search, and pagination consistently across animals (#205, #207), adoptions (#199), and people (#211). This is exactly the table-stakes CRUD surface teams usually burn weeks on. Adopting the package removes that from our roadmap and lets engineering focus on differentiating workflow.
  • Feature roadmap — operational tooling: the release points to a coherent shelter/rescue domain: intake and animal records, adoption pipeline, people registry, and staff accounts. Preset filters (personalised and archive views, #210) indicate opinionated, operator-facing UX rather than raw scaffolding — a signal the maintainer understands the daily workflow, not just the schema.
  • Identity modelling decision: linking a user to an optional person (#204) cleanly separates authentication identity from domain identity. That supports staff accounts with no person record, external/adopter accounts later, and avoids forcing a 1:1 that we would have had to unwind.
  • Use cases to evaluate against: internal shelter/rescue operations, volunteer and foster coordination, adoption application triage, and as a reference implementation if we build a similar domain in-house.
  • Risk item for roadmap planning: the frontend scroll-position fix (#201) and the PHPUnit/DDEV fixes are maintenance, not capability. They suggest an actively dogfooded app — good — but also that the project is still stabilising its own environment.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • We need a Laravel-native animal intake / adoption domain and want to skip building the listing, filtering, and search layer.
  • An opinionated domain model is acceptable, and we can adapt our workflows to it rather than the reverse.
  • We can pin versions and absorb churn — this is a 0.x release, so breaking changes between minor versions should be assumed, not treated as an exception.
  • The team is comfortable reading vendor source to extend behaviour, since pre-1.0 packages rarely document every edge.

Look elsewhere when:

  • We need multi-tenant or multi-shelter isolation at scale; nothing in this release indicates it exists.
  • The domain is adjacent but not the same (wildlife, livestock, general CRM) — the animal/adoption/people vocabulary will fight us.
  • We require LTS support, a published deprecation policy, or a security-response commitment.
  • We need only one small piece (e.g. just the user–person link). Pulling an entire domain package for a single join is a poor trade.
  • Regulatory or data-residency constraints mean we cannot depend on an unvetted third-party domain layer.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: this package now covers the operational core of adoption management — searchable, filterable, paginated lists for animals, adoptions, and people — which is functionality we would otherwise scope and build ourselves. The commercial case is time-to-market on internal tooling. The honest caveat is maturity: it is pre-1.0, so we should adopt it behind a pinned version with a contained blast radius rather than as a foundation.

For engineering: Laravel-idiomatic, with the list-filtering concerns extracted rather than hand-rolled per resource, and a sound optional user–person relation that keeps authentication separate from domain records. The trade-off is upgrade cost — expect breaking changes across 0.x minors — so budget a review each release and keep our customisations thin and close to the package's own extension points.
