Laravel Sybase Laravel Package

uepg/laravel-sybase

Laravel Sybase adds Sybase ASE database support to Laravel, providing a driver connector and query builder so Eloquent and the DB facade work with Sybase via PDO dblib. Configure hosts, credentials, charset, and options in config/database.php.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy (integrate vs. replace): This package is the "integrate" option for teams whose system of record is a legacy Sybase ASE database and who want a Laravel application (admin panel, reporting portal, workflow tool, customer-facing API) on top of it. Adopting it is a decision to not migrate data yet — evaluate it explicitly against the cost and risk of an ETL/data-migration project.
  • Roadmap sequencing: It enables a phased roadmap — Phase 1 read-mostly Laravel UI over ASE, Phase 2 new writes in Laravel, Phase 3 (optional) migration to MySQL/Postgres. Being a thin driver rather than an ORM/abstraction layer, it keeps Phase 3 open: Eloquent code written against the connection largely survives a later engine swap if queries stay ANSI-flavored.
  • Data fidelity and internationalization (new in 6.2): The fix: application encoding change means connection/handle encoding is now derived from the application rather than left implicit. For a PM this reopens questions that were previously unsafe to answer "yes" to: can we accept non-ASCII user input (names with accents, diacritics, currency symbols), and can we trust data read from ASE is not mojibake? Treat 6.2 as the minimum version for any app handling user-entered text, and gate any such feature on a verification spike with real accented data.
  • Vendor/maintenance risk posture: Maintenance comes from a single institutional maintainer (UEPG) with a small contributor base. That is a legitimate dependency for internal/back-office tooling and a poor one for revenue-critical paths without an internal owner who can read the connector code.
  • Scope triage for the backlog: Because it plugs into Laravel's native connection/query-builder/Eloquent stack, there is no new API to learn and no product surface to redesign — the cost is concentrated in infrastructure (FreeTDS/PDO_DBLIB on every environment) rather than in feature work.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • Sybase ASE is already in production, is owned by another team or vendor, and will not be replaced within your planning horizon.
  • You are building a Laravel app whose primary job is CRUD/reporting against that data, and duplicating the schema into another database would create reconciliation work you cannot staff.
  • You can install and pin system-level dependencies (pdo_dblib / FreeTDS or the Sybase client libs) in every environment, including CI and local dev — not just production.
  • The package's supported Laravel major matches yours; verify this per upgrade rather than assuming, since Laravel majors move faster than a small package's release cadence.
  • You have (or can get) a non-production ASE instance for integration tests. Unit tests against SQLite will not catch driver, collation, or encoding regressions — including the class of bug fixed in 6.2.

Look elsewhere when:

  • The data could realistically be migrated or replicated to MySQL/Postgres — a supported, first-party driver is almost always the cheaper long-term decision.
  • You need SQL Anywhere rather than ASE (different product, different driver) or need SAP-backed commercial support with an SLA.
  • You are on shared/managed hosting where you cannot add PHP extensions or client libraries.
  • You need first-party vendor accountability for a revenue-critical system and have no engineer willing to own a fork.
  • Your workload is analytics/warehouse-shaped rather than transactional — a CDC/ETL pipeline into a supported warehouse will serve you better than a live OLTP driver.

Version note on 6.2: This is a patch-level bugfix, not a feature release. There are no breaking changes or deprecations to plan around, so the adoption decision is unchanged from 6.0 — but pin >=6.2 and add a regression test asserting round-trip integrity of accented and non-Latin characters before shipping anything that accepts user text.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a small, low-cost integration library that lets us put a modern Laravel front end on the Sybase ERP without a rip-and-replace program. It removes the single largest cost and schedule risk from the roadmap — the data migration — and defers that spend until the business case for migration is proven. The trade-off is concentration risk: it is maintained by a single university group rather than a vendor, so I recommend scoping it to internal and back-office tooling, assigning one engineer as internal owner, and capping the blast radius until we have a migration path. Latest release (6.2) is a bugfix, not a breaking change — the decision is unchanged, and the fix actually removes a data-correctness risk for non-English text.

For engineering: It is a connection/query-builder driver, not a new abstraction — Eloquent and the DB facade work as normal, so there is no novel API to learn. Requirements: matching Laravel major, pdo_dblib/FreeTDS on every environment including CI, and a real ASE instance for integration tests. Do not merge user-facing text features without a charset round-trip test; 6.2 fixes application encoding, and that is exactly the failure mode we would not catch in SQLite-based tests. Pin the version, keep queries ANSI-flavored to preserve a future engine swap, and budget a small amount of ongoing effort to track upstream releases since the maintainer cadence is low.
