Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature scoping for internal admin tooling. This package only matters if we're shipping a Laravel Nova admin panel and operators need validation or business-rule failures surfaced inside the record form (rather than as a toast or a redirect back with an error bag). That is a genuine but narrow admin-UX problem, not a customer-facing capability.
  • Build vs. buy: a clear "build" input. With 2 stars, 0 dependents, and a last release of 2019-10-31, this is not a vendor dependency — it's a pattern. The decision it informs is "do we invest ~1 engineer-day to write a local Nova field, or nothing at all," not "do we adopt a library."
  • Roadmap sequencing for back-office quality. If admin error visibility is on the roadmap, it belongs in an internal-tooling polish epic (alongside empty states, inline validation, audit trails), not in a product release. It should be sized in hours and gated behind whether Nova is even our admin stack going forward.
  • Upgrade-risk budgeting. Nova has moved through multiple major versions since this was published. Any decision to depend on it creates a latent cost in every Nova/Laravel/PHP upgrade, with no upstream maintainer to absorb it.
  • Use cases it covers: explaining why a record can't be saved or transitioned, showing rule violations from domain services, and improving operator self-service so backend engineers field fewer "why did this fail" tickets.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only as read-only source material:

  • You are on an older Nova major (2.x/3.x) with pinned legacy dependencies, and you need a stopgap this sprint.
  • You want to see how a minimal custom Nova field is structured before writing your own — the surface area is small enough to read in one sitting.
  • You have a hard constraint against writing any new field code and accept the maintenance debt explicitly.

Look elsewhere (or build) when:

  • You are on Nova 4/5, Laravel 9+, or PHP 8.1+ — an unreleased-since-2019 field is unlikely to be compatible, and there is no maintainer to fix it.
  • You need a support SLA, security review, license clarity, or a CVE response path. None exist here.
  • The underlying need is already covered: Nova's built-in read-only Text/HTML field, a custom card, or Laravel's native validation error bag plus Nova's notification/toast system will solve most of this with zero new dependencies.
  • Anything customer-facing, multi-tenant, or compliance-relevant — the blast radius of an unmaintained field is disproportionate to the value.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: We evaluated a community add-on for our admin panel. It's a single-purpose UI field, last updated in 2019, with two GitHub stars and no downstream users. Adopting it would add an unmaintained dependency to our stack for a cosmetic gain. Recommendation: do not adopt; do not budget for it. If the capability is worth having, we build it ourselves in about a day and own it outright.

To engineering: Treat this repo as a reference implementation, not a dependency. A local Nova field that renders validation and domain-rule failures in the record form is roughly 40–80 lines plus a test; that version stays compatible with our Nova version, ships with our CI, and dies cleanly if we change admin stacks. Fallback if we don't want custom code at all: a read-only Nova Text field or a custom card driven by our existing error bag costs near zero and covers 80% of the need.

Bottom line: the package's only real value is the idea, and the idea is cheap to reproduce. Opportunity here is an internal one-day task, not a procurement decision.
